Right now is the worst time for APs. Unless you absolutely can’t afford a nanny (even live-in), hold off until after covid. |
Are you asking for horror stories about hosting an au pair so you don't get another one? |
Yes, or at least to help let go of the disappointment that our relationship with our first au pair went down in flames |
Agree, not the moment to get an Au pair. Too many challenges, and demands. Honestly, just go for a nanny or other alternative child care. Don't think this is the only options and you need to make this work -- that is how I was, and was getting crazy demands from the au pair, and I kept thinking I had to do them. Finally we just quit the program, and are figuring out ourselves, and it is working just fine. What a relief. |
If you qualify for the waiver any ap from any country can come. The fly on humanitarian flights so it is not impacted by travel ban. It is very expensive though for the visa and flight. |
If they can get a visa. If the office isn’t open, no visa. |
We have had au pairs for 5 years now. Love our au pairs, and have always had a great relationship with them. of course, we pay over the minimum (usually 250-300/week) and treat our au pairs like family. We visit them in their home countries after they leave, and host them when they come visit the U.S.
We're just hoping to keep our current AP until end of next year (she is extending for an additional year this winter), and will probably call it a day once her term is done. Hopefully, they wouldn't kill the program and send existing in-country APs home....right? |
Almost every country will accept emergency appointments and the waiver process uses emergency appointments....hence the higher fees. So those with an extra 1-3k can cover the additional fees and flight costs. |
Trump should cancel this green card program straight away. We don't need any programs encouraging foreign women to come to the US to marry US men. There's enough encouragement as it is. |

![]() There is no Green Card involved. It's an exchange visa. |
how did you get here? you are obviously lost, fox news is the other way lol |
Join some FB groups for host families. You will likely never be tempted to get an au pair ever again. There are plenty of stories of safety issues (multiple warnings about failure to watch kids around the pool/beach before au pair got rematched, au pair lost a child/forgot to pick them up multiple times but tried to hide the incidents from the host family, au pair had personal health issues/eating disorder but the agency rematched them anyway with the strong suggestion to never leave them completely alone with the kids, etc.) Or you could go with the sensational ones like the au pair slept with a teenage son/kids' teacher/next door neighbor/host dad, got pregnant, has a sugar daddy, etc. The reality of the program is that it's advertised differently to both sides. For au pairs, it's an all expenses paid trip to travel, meet friends, and learn English with some childcare required. For host families, we're supposed to be getting reliable and flexible childcare from someone who will love our kids like a big sister/brother that we'll also share American culture/traditions. |
It becomes a green card when they find an american that will marry them. |
I am imagining this poster - an aging nanny with no life - bitter and unhappy. Who needs that energy. Yuck. |
