Perpetrators of illegal things (illegal workers) should not get free passes just to snitch on others.

Yes this. We had a terrible time finding a nanny willing to be paid on the books and ended up having to find another form of child care instead.

You should have offered more salary.

Your "victim" is evading taxes. Thus also a criminal. It takes two.

OK, that is just dumb and will never happen.

I wish nanny's would organize.

$18 per hour seemed sufficient in a city with a lower COL than DC. Sometimes it is not the employer's fault.

+ 1,000,000. You had a hard time finding a legal nanny because you were paying and "illegal" rate. Absolutely no other reason.

A lot of "out of status" nannies get paid very well -- especially since they don't have to withhold tax. A good friend pays her the same as I pay mine -- $19/hour -- but hers doesn't have to withhold tax so it ends up a lot more. Anyway, it's not fair to the nannies who have to take out taxes -- but why is everyone talking about the "criminal employers"? I get that some are being taken advantage of -- but most that I've heard of around here (NW DC) get paid more than fairly.

I pay $10 an hour on the books (in a city way less expensive than DC). I had plenty of applicants.

Bet you feel really great offering pennies more than minimum wage.

Sigh. This is why I really dislike this forum.

If she was used to earning 20 or 25 on the books, you'd be out of luck.

How smart, you send them to prision and all the expenses will come from your packet later.

Because the employers of off-the-books nannies are breaking the law - thus making them criminal employers. The nannies are criminals too but this thread is about the employers.
