You could probably get a trained dog for less.

I disagree in my experience as a white American nanny with a masters degree in early childhood education and 15 years of experience. I have found that most illegal nannies make more then I do. I'm not sure if it's because foreigners are just the industry standard and families want what everyone else has. Maybe they like helping people start a nice life here in the USA. Sometimes I wish I was illegal so I could make more money. American white nannies with college degrees seem to be the bottom of the bareel.

You are doing something very wrong to be earning so little in Falls Church, PP. Perhaps you accepted a job too quickly before doing proper research and just got stuck with a very low paying job. Not to be cruel, but are you obese or have another physical challenge that would make you less desirable with your credentials? Do you interview badly (by that I mean very shy, standoffish, snobby or on the autistic spectrum)?

I was wondering the same things, PP. Your education and experience do not match what you claim to be earning in Falls Church or anywhere.

I'm very picky about the jobs I take. I prefer long term nanny positions. Once I'm in a position I tend to stay until I am no longer needed. Unfortunately the jobs I am drawn to tend to pay very low. I am one who goes by gut instinct. I like to have that feeling that let's me know yes this is a good match. I am shy and soft spoken. I'm a little over weight 5'0 150. But I am very flexible on the hours I will work.

As a Hispanic woman, I will tell you that many Hispanic people will pretend not to speak English or understand it to avoid conversation with strangers. I wouldn't be surprised if that nanny understood every word you said and just faked not understanding. My grandmother who immigrated over 50 years ago still pretends to not understand and speaks prefect English. Also, Spanish is the second largely spoken language in this country, so if there were an emergency you could get someone who speaks it on the line. The family might also be bilingual so having a nanny who speaks fluent Spanish is a benefit in their eyes because their children will grow up bilingual with the proper accent and reinforce their culture that often gets lost once the children enter school and spend more time with friends.

Are you asking for annual raises, PP? In a longterm position that will definitely keep you more in line with what you should be earning.

I accepted a lower paying position (I'm the PP with the same educational background but preschool teaching rather than nanny experience) in my current job because it was literally two blocks from my home and I hate commuting. But I did ask for a 10% pay raise and added benefits at my first annual review and was granted them.

Honestly, I am more concerned with an undocumented nanny's reluctance to call the authorities for help than the Spanish language only issue (as stated, most places have Spanish speakers).

But the grandmother-child-care-provider who spoke a far less common (in the USA) language and no English would definitely be a worry.

I've never asked for a raise. I'm not comfortable doing that. I have received 3 raises in my nanny career. I do however usually receive a Christmas bonus.

You need to ask for an annual review, Nanny, and at that time ask for a raise (at least 7%). No one is going to pay more than they have to for anything. Your low earnings have little to do with your skin color or citizenship and everything to do with your lack of confidence.

Wait. Did I miss something? Did alleged "white American nanny" actually share her rate? I didn't see that. I did see her complaining about illegal nannies making more, but I'm suspicious. How would she know that?

She may be underpaid, or she may be whining that she wants more than the job pays for. Either way, she should probably start looking for a new job because bitterness is not an attractive quality in a nanny.

I'm not bitter, I'm envious. I am actually starting a new job in February, unfortunately it pays on the lower end 10 per hr for 50 hrs per week.

Thanks for calling me an idiot. Yes I work for 10 an hr. Like I said I sometimes wish I was an illegal immigrant that didn't speak English because then maybe I could make more. Im happy to be starting a new job and I'm lucky to have always worked for amazing families that have treated me with a lot of respect. I try and always look on the bight side. I'm not bitter about my salary. But the salaries on dcum make me wonder sometimes what I'm doing wrong.

I am a white American nanny without a master's degree in education and I earn more than double what you make. IT HAS NOTHING TO SO WITH RACE OR IMMIGRATION STATUS. You are accepting poorly paying jobs and I have no idea why. My employers treat me with respect AND pay me fairly. You whining about illegals makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Whine about me - a white American woman with only a BA in History and who speaks no other language making more than double what you are making in Falls Church.

Yes, you truly are an idiot. Why in the world would you accept such a low paying position?!

I'm not sure why the OP doesn't consider that the MB and/or DB speak Spanish themselves.

I'm sure one of them must -- how could they communicate about the child otherwise? But I think the point of the post was wondering/stating that it is dangerous to the child to have a nanny who speaks no english in case of an emergency when she is caring for the child.
