I disagree in my experience as a white American nanny with a masters degree in early childhood education and 15 years of experience. I have found that most illegal nannies make more then I do. I'm not sure if it's because foreigners are just the industry standard and families want what everyone else has. Maybe they like helping people start a nice life here in the USA. Sometimes I wish I was illegal so I could make more money. American white nannies with college degrees seem to be the bottom of the bareel. [/quote]

You are doing something very wrong to be earning so little in Falls Church, PP.  Perhaps you accepted a job too quickly before doing proper research and just got stuck with a very low paying job.  Not to be cruel, but are you obese or have another physical challenge that would make you less desirable with your credentials?  Do you interview badly (by that I mean very shy, standoffish, snobby or on the autistic spectrum)?  [/quote]

I'm very picky about the jobs I take. I prefer long term nanny positions. Once I'm in a position I tend to stay until I am no longer needed. Unfortunately the jobs I am drawn to tend to pay very low. I am one who goes by gut instinct. I like to have that feeling that let's me know yes this is a good match. I am shy and soft spoken. I'm a little over weight 5'0 150. But I am very flexible on the hours I will work. [/quote]

Are you asking for annual raises, PP?  In a longterm position that will definitely keep you more in line with what you should be earning.

I accepted a lower paying position (I'm the PP with the same educational background but preschool teaching rather than nanny experience) in my current job because it was literally two blocks from my home and I hate commuting.  But I did ask for a 10% pay raise and added benefits at my first annual review and was granted them.  [/quote]
I've never asked for a raise. I'm not comfortable doing that. I have received 3 raises in my nanny career. I do however usually receive a Christmas bonus.[/quote]
