Should I accept this live in position? Advice greatly appreciated RSS feed

It's not that we haven't heard of it, it's just that as a parent, I can't guarantee that you're going to get a particular net rate because I don't know your tax situation. I can guarantee you a gross rate because that's how much would leave my hands and go into yours. If you know how much you want to make weekly/monthly/annually, you can estimate about what gross rate you would need to earn based on your own situation. But I would never guarantee someone a net rate because of the variables that are outside of my control.

Why on earth are you going for your masters if you want to be a career nanny? Why go into debt on something that isn't necessary?

Ignore the hater. Education = freedom.

Exactly.

Also, I agree w/ the other poster that advanced education (masters) won't impact whether I'd hire you. I value experience over advanced degrees in a nanny.

You need some more experience to command the rates and ability to dictate your terms OP, at least in my market (just outside DC). You're too expensive and choosy for me to select you over the many, many extremely qualified, experienced and capable applicants I would get for a job at a rate where your net would be anywhere around $18/hr.

Only if you can get a job in your particular field. I would not consider a nanny with a master's degree depending on the field as I'd wonder what is wrong with them that they cannot get a job in their specific field.

Trying to keep her down by discouraging her to continue her education.

Sounds like a great job op. and they pay great ! I'm a live in nanny and I make 10 per hr in the Tyson's area.

The girl should continue her education as she comes off extremely ignorant.

Tell a family what you want your net rate to be! Why, no one on here has ever thought of that! You are a genius! Just wait until you try to find a job as something other than a nanny and see what they say when you tell them what you want your net pay to be. I can already hear their laughter.

OP, you come off as such an entitled little girl who thinks because she has an easy bake oven, she is ready to win Top Chef. I get that you are 22 and that is what most 20somethings sound like, but just know that is not what most employers are looking for in a nanny.

OP HERE: I truly appreciate everyone's advice !! I am not at all trying to come off entitled or anything. I was offered the position and I was just comparing it to my current position I have that is part-time and a current "real job" I am also being offered. At 16:59, you should know when just finishing college.. No job is actually asking me for a salary requirement because I would be considered entry level versus someone of your age and credentials. So that was an ugly statement coming from you. Overall. I was weighing my options and simply wanted opinions about the job.. Not about me being ignorant or anything else. I have not had an issue gaining employment whether being a part-time nanny or full-time nanny.. At this time, I have multiple job offers and I wanted to know this board's opinion on this position. I now understand live -in nannies make less because they are boarding, but if I am offered the position at a lower rate than what I am used to, I will stick to live-out. So I do thank you all for advising me on that. Some may think I am inexperienced but I am used to making at least $18/hr live-out. Could be because I do a lot driving and families I typically work for have a hard time finding a nanny with their own reliable vehicle who's comfortable with driving, i dont't know. Also, I use a tax calculator so it helps figuring out the figures for gross and net $. I will now negotiate gross rates moving forward!

I still don't understand the need for going after your masters. I see people all the time in their 20's who aren't sure what they want to do next, so they drown themselves in debt. I'm not being a "hater" -- I'm offering advice!

A masters does absolutely nothing if you want to be a career nanny. Now, if you want to work as a nanny while you're in school, or maybe until you figure things out before you choose a different career, that's entirely different.

To get a masters just because seems like a poor idea. Just my 2 cents.
