Do you give your nanny a key for your house? RSS feed

I have almost always had a key, even with PT positions. The one that I don't, it's because they have 3 different people helping out throughout the week and don't want to make that many extra keys. There is one set that gets used by us all. It is put in a secure location outside of the apartment (no random strangers can get to it). We call the MB to get buzzed into the building and can either get the key before work, or during work when coming home with the child. But that position is just a short one anyways, for 90 minutes and we don't go out anywhere after getting home, so no problem for me.

Everything else people have given me a key whether needed or not. I actually had one family tell me to keep their key for this summer, while not working for them (since kids are in camp), but I told them I didn't feel right doing so and I gave it back to them. We plan on working with each other again in Aug so they didn't think it was a big deal for me to keep the key.

I usually get a key to the house to keep on my ring, especially because I'm usually picking up from preschool and getting to the house before any parents are home. But I have worked for a family that left a key on a hook by the door. I took it out with us during the day and left it in the evening. It wasn't too bad but I did forget to take it off my keyring a lot.

How dumb. They trust you w/their kids, but not w/their belongings.

Do you mean they never let you have access to a house key or do you mean, they do not want you to have one when not on the job?

Either way, that is just stupid. Sounds like they have serious trust issues.

OP, where are they from? Just curious .

of course. I would think it's a much bigger safety risk to be getting the hide-a-key every day - much more likely someone notices where it is. But I WOH, not WAH and nanny is out and about often so she comes and goes a lot.
