I just started a new position and the family said they are not going to give me a key for the house in case I lose my keys... This is like wtf to me. You trust me with your kids but not your key? They have a hidden key I am supposed to use every day and remember to put it back... |
Yes, I always have a key. How are you supposed to go out during the day if you can't lock and unlock the door? What do they want you to do? |
Oh, sorry. Obviously skimming.
The hidden key is okay I guess, but I'd be like you - very wtf and definitely keeping my finger on the pulse of any other jobs I saw advertised. It doesn't bode well for the long-term, imo. |
Making you retrieve a "hidden" key is really stupid. I'd feel that my safety is compromised. You don't know who might notice you getting that key every day. Resider this a major red flag. You might want to put yourself out there and see who might be looking for a new nanny. |
Hmmm I'm not sure how I feel. What if something happens to the hidden key? I currently work with a work at home dad and the mom gave me a key. The dad is always home so I leave the door unlocked when coming and going out. Mb just gave me a key recently. She said she feels that I should have one. Some families have just given me their garage door openers. I don't know if that would be a red flag for me. Sometimes I lose keys so maybe it would be better for me not to have one ![]() |
I would be cautious about using a hidden key, seems far too obvious and if something goes wrong they may blame you. Just have them get a spare key and keychain for your use. You don't have to keep it with you. |
I know exactly where a neighbor to my old nanny families house kept their spare key. The dog walker used it every day. That said, I'm sure they had an alarm inside, but still... |
I think it's odd that a family will trust a nanny with their child but not give them access to their house to go out with their child(ren). I'd say my experience has been a 50/50 split between families giving keys and not giving keys. Current position- was given a key on my second day. |
It's another example of the twisted thinking of some mb parents. |
Can they give you a garage code instead, or is there no garage? |
Meh. Mine doesn't have a key. I work from home. If she is outside she doesn't need to lock the door. And she doesn't drive them anywhere. It just depends on the circumstances. I have no aversion but don't have a need. |
Why do you care? You get to go out. You just get the hidden key, go out and then by the end of the day return it. Is there some reason why you need to take a key home? |
They don't trust you with a key, but they trust you with their children? That's some messed up thinking.
Go get a key cut.. lol. Seriously though I would have to think twice about the position. |
Maybe they simply think its unnecessary to get an additional copy made? Don't understand why you need to take a key home anyway? Aren't the parents there when you arrive? |
A good nanny is concerned not only with that of her charge, but her own as well. At least one would hope. |
