White nannies in the Silver Spring area? RSS feed

Is just saying the word white in to context of skin color automatically racist?? I would love if someone could identify the specifically racist content of this post.

It's not racist. I think OP was likely being intentionally inflammatory, but I don't think the post was racist. It would seem we are all a little uncomfortable with a white woman actively seeking out the company of other white women purely on the basis of their skin color, but admittedly had she been any other race I don't think I'd have given it a second thought. There was even a post recently of a nanny looking for Fillipina nannies in silver spring and no one screamed racist. I do see a difference though in seeking companionship of others who speak your language and share your culture, which is perhaps all OP was looking for but could have been worded more tactfully.

This, though I don't think it was intentionally inflammatory.

Seriously, this is what I can't stand about DCUM!

Why should this be reported? She made NO racist statement. Simply asked if there were white nannies around. Maybe she wants to be friends with them? Who cares why? It is EXACTLY like the filipina nanny post. Yet no one screamed racist at that.

And i am not white, so do not claim that I am now racist. In fact, if the reason she posted this was because she only wanted white friends, I would think she was dispicable. But I would NOT yell troll, report it or anything else. Because right now, I have no clue why she posted this. But it is not blatant racism. It is similar to many other posts! Just because it says "white" does not mean it's racist.

With that being said, I will respond to OP. No, not that I know of. You might want to move to a less racially diverse area if you want that. If you want to live here, you are going to have to mix with other races.

It is racist to say "I'm looking for some white nannies to hang out with." Why? Because she is intentionally excluding everyone else. When you exclude people based on their skin color, we call that racism.

Making a judgement or value-based statement about someone based on their skin color is racist. Actively seeking out people who look like you is not. Would we be calling her a man-hater if she was looking for female nannies to hang out with? Nope, pretty sure not. AANNNDD she did not actively exclude any race (note the post did not say I am ONLY looking for white nannies to hang out with) people are just making assumptions left and right. Was the post in poor taste? For sure. Is it possible OP is not from the US and feels more comfortable around people who look like her?
Perhaps people could look at this from multiple angles before crying racism.

Do you think the Filipina nanny post was racist? Do you think the SAHM playgroups are classist? Do you think the people looking for US born nannies are xenophobic?

She was not excluding anyone. She wanted to know where the white people were. That's cool. Go and find some white nannies! Who cares???

I think it's crazy people are jumping up and reporting her. That means that you need to report all the other nannies that seek out the company of people that are like them. Go to ANY playground where nannies frequent and tell me how many groups are divided by the nationality of the nanny. It is the EXACT same thing!

I specifically said that asking for a nanny who spoke a particular language was fine.

I said that asking for a nanny with a particular country of origin was also acceptable because there can be cultural issues at play that may be desirable (or not), or a nanny may just want to meet some people from her home country or an MB might want to know her nanny has a higher likelihood of subscribing to specific cultural customs or beliefs.

A SAHM group is a SAHM group because WAHM/WOHMs are not available to attend playgroups. Because they are working. Obviously. I'm sure if a working mom had Tuesday off the SAHM group would welcome her presence.

I didn't see the Filipina nanny post so I can't say if I found it objectionable or not, but I'm guessing that falls under the umbrella of "country of origin" and has a higher likelihood of being acceptable.

Ok well since we are all going by your standards, she is a huge racist! Can I get your personal email just so I can run my posts by you from now on...you know I need to make sure something is okay and you are fine with it. Come off it, really.

Sorry? I was clarifying my own position based on previous posts I had made, since the PP said "what about this, would this be racist? huh huh? what about this? what about that?" soooo to be sure we were on the same page I was informing her who I was and which posts were mine.

And yeah, my standards are THE standards used in civilized society. If you're excluding someone because of their skin color, that's racist. End of story. There are other ways to be discriminatory, and even other ways to be racist, but there is no way to argue that this is not.

I agree with the PP on that first part. As for the last part, maybe this person is white and has tons of black and asian friends already, but doesn't have many white friends. Maybe she wants to be friends with more nannies as well. So maybe she wants to meet more white nannies to widen her social group? Who knows and who cares.

Definition of RACISM

1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination

If you are looking for something specific that doesn't necessarily mean you are being racist. It could be, if you are against having any friends that are not white, then you are. Of course, these days you can't really look at someone and tell that they are "white". Many mixed races look like they can just be a naturally darker skinned white person. But there are many times that you are seeking something and it wouldn't be considered racist. If a company that does polls using information from different ethnicities, then some polls they will only need whites to do, some will only need asians etc. It is not them being racist in these situations, they don't think one group is better than any others etc, they just need info from that one particular group at that time.

I can have tons of white friends but maybe I don't have so many black ones. I can look for black nannies to become friends with and not have that be racist. I have nothing against whites, I am just looking for more friends from another race at that time. Just like I could go in search of more gay friends, or maybe catholic friends when most of my other friends are other denominations. It doesn't mean I am counting out people from other races/sexual orientations/religions because I don't like them or think mine is superior, and that is what RACISM is about, hiring that white guy instead of the black one when they are both equal in all matters of education and experience just because the boss is racist and dislikes blacks.

Smh. You should be seeking out friend with similar interests and personality types, not trying to fill a quota so that you don't seem racist. That's called reversed racism and its just as bad. I'm Hispanic but grew up in a "white" community, the majority of my friends were white. When I left, the majority of my friends were of Asian and Hispanic or black decent. I didn't seek them out, I just moved to a more diverse community and I just so happen to connect with these individuals. The reason I connected was because of our similar education, jobs and hobbies. Never once did I think "oh, I need a black best friend". I dunno where you live, who your friends are but I suggest you branch out and explore the world because your views are really flawed.

Interesting that the OP has not returned to clarify herself.

8:25 is exactly right.

All the PPs who don't think this post is racist, let me rewrite it and tell me what you think:

Hi all, I'm looking for some black/AA nannies in the Silver Springs area - preferably not too dark, more like a caramel complexion. TIA!

Yeah, I think you'd be hard pressed to say that isn't racist (although this is DCUM so I'm sure someone will try) and IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME THING.
