Nanny keeps lying to us. We don't trust her at all.

I would not give any notice. Once you have a new nanny ready to start the next day, I'd hand her a check for all the time she's worked and say, "Due to your continued lying we're unable to trust you any longer caring for our daughter. So this has been your last day. Here is your check. Please give us back our keys now."
Then change your alarm code. |

If she keeps lying to you, then in my opinion, that would be an immediate firing offense + she would be out the door as soon as possible.
Give her her last paycheck and let her go. A lying nanny is a nanny who cannot be trusted and therefore should not be allowed around your DD. |
Do not give her notice!!! Have her last paycheck in your hand along with any severance promised and fire her - let her gather her things and say good-bye to the kids and walk out.
What job fires you and then tells you to keep working for two weeks? I'm not being snarky -I actually have never heard of this before. |
MB here and I agree w/ everyone else. Give her notice, get your keys, hand her a final check (w/ some severance) and say goodbye.

Thank you very much MBs. What about severance in that kind of situation? We don't have it in the contract. When we hired her we thought she would work for us at least 3 years. We had no idea she was a liar. |
What is she lying about? Are you sure she's lying? |
If you are going to let her go without letting her try to correct her actions then you at least owe her 2 extra weeks of pay even if you chose not to ask her to work those weeks.
Don't take advantage of another nanny. |
I do not give any severance to someone I have to fire for cause. So in this case, give none. |
MB here. In our contract with our nanny we have stipulated that firing for cause receives no severance.
In reality, I don't wish anyone any ill (unless they have harmed or endangered my child) and being fired is hard - I've been there. So I would give some severance, and how much would be influenced by the circumstances. If you can afford it, two weeks severance is generous, completely defensible, and lets you know that you took the high road. |
Totally wrong. Trying to correct your actions means doing a better job diapering the baby, or learning that cleaning up from lunch includes wiping the high chair tray and not just washing the used dishes. It does not mean waiting for an employee to stop lying. Severance is for when you lay someone off, and there is zero fault. The kids have grown up, you're moving out of town, a family member will care for the kids for free, etc. those are examples of laying someone off, where severance would be appropriate. In this situation it's the nanny taking advantage of the employer by lying. She deserves to be fired, and deserves zero severance. |
I wouldn't want to screw anyone over unless they were evil (lying about not buying drugs with the baby in the car or turning tricks while my child watches) You do not have to give severance pay when firing someone if you don't have a contract but it is the moral thing to do.
I would expect two weeks notice if an employee was quitting and I would give two weeks pay if I fired an employee. |
If you are firing her for cause, absolutely do NOT give her severance. That's like giving a reward to someone for forcing you to find a new nanny on no notice due to her bad behavior. Not to mention, it would further penalize you because you would be paying twice (severance for old nanny and wages for new nanny) because your present nanny is so bad you need her immediately out of your house. It makes no sense to give more money to a bad nanny you need to fire. If nannies want severance, they should not do anything worthy of firing. If the nanny were being laid off, that is different. She would be leaving through no fault of her own and should absolutely receive severance. |
