Charge [partially] to blame for broken iPad?? RSS feed

Anonymous
My husband and I just bought a brand new ipad air on black Friday; This past Monday, I had set it on top of a bookshelf in the playroom at work and walked away for a second--when I turned around, I see my 3 and 4 yr old charges jumping onto beanbags that unfortunately, were touching the bookshelf, which shook it and caused the ipad to fall straight down onto the tiled floor, landing flat on its front and smashing the entire screen.

It is totally my fault that I left the ipad in such a precarious spot. [I had it in there in the first place b/c I was looking up directions to make party hats for the kids for NYE!) my question is: would you, as an employer, feel responsible to shoulder some of the "blame" and repair cost? Or would you, as a nanny, expect this? I wasnt really expecting them to, but my bosses have said to let them know about the status of the repair (when I find out what the deal is going to be to fix it) and have since asked twice (on Tue and Wed) about it.

I only just found out yesterday that it will be $305 to "fix" (aka possibly replace...it's up to Apple and if they deem it fixable when they get it). However, MB/DB have not asked about it since then, nor have I brought it up. Since i dont necessarily think it's their responsibility to help pay for it (am I wrong in thinking that?), I feel awkward saying anything now if they dont bring it up first. Should I??

Forgot to say that my bosses never outright said they were going to help pay for it....only asked about status of repair, which I thought possibly implies they were thinking of helping with cost. No?

Ahh i'd say no because you had it lying on a shelf in the children's playroom. Your employers are probably also concerned that you will be paying attention to the new Ipad instead of caring for your charges.

I really don't no if they SHOULD.. My opinion is no but I don't no.

Shit happens, I don't think it's their responsibility to replace it unless the kids were jumping on it or something. This was an honest mistake and like you said, mostly your own fault.

I wouldn't expect them to. It was a genuine accident based in part on you not being careful enough, not on the kids playing with it without your permission or mishandling it.

I can't believe you brought your new toy to work. Consider that $305 your stupid fine for doing it and you should pay it yourself.

No, it is your responsibility as it is your property that you left in a spot that it could be damaged. I would not have brought a new iPad to work if you were not willing to be responsible for it if it gets damaged. If you choose to give it to a kid, and they broke it, I'd still consider it your responsibility. If it were theirs, I would think differently. You pay for the repairs, your iPad, it broke on your watch. If they broke it, they pay.

I don't think they have responsibility to pay for it. You brought it to work and put it in a precarious place.

One day I had my laptop in a bag on the couch. My charge sat on it. It was fine, but if it had been broken it would have been on me -- I brought it to work and I left it on the couch.

Now, if I wore glasses daily and my charge grabbed them and broke them? I'd expect help paying for that. Because it's not like I can leave those at home unless I went with contacts.

I'm on your side OP. Yes, you brought it over of your own volition and the damage was an accident but I would feel very remiss if I did not offer to at least help you with the repair. There is no obligation on the part of your MB/DB but it is just the courteous thing to do (or at least an offer).
No one is in the wrong here, though, its just a crappy situation all around.

MB here. I'm sorry, OP, but I think this was your unfortunate mistake and you should pay for the repair.

If it were me, I would expect this to be my responsibility. I wouldn't have brought it to work without a damn good case. FYI, I do bring my IPad to work because I use it for the log and to communicate with my bosses. I use an otter box case, and its pretty indestructible. My iPad has been dropped in water, tossed down stairs, stepped on, sat on, etc. and this case was well worth the money!

You should be ashamed of yourself if you expect your employers to pay for this. Good grief.

1. You brought it into work to entertain yourself.
2. You left it on a shelf.
3. Either the kids are allowed to jump on bean bag chairs in the playroom and they were doing what they were supposed to doing OR they aren't allowed to jump on bean bag chairs and you weren't supervising them.

I can't believe that you came to post about this considering that maybe the parents should pay for what you did.

I don't think its your bosses responsibility to pay so I wouldn't mention it unless they do. and even then I would just answer with how much it was going to cost you.
You left it where you did and its not like the children were directly playing with it and deliberately being rough
