Thinking of hiring Au Pair but worried because husband works from home RSS feed

Anonymous
We have a 1.5 year old and a new baby on the way and we've been talking about hiring an Au Pair. Husband is completely on board with it but I'm a little worried because my husband works full time from home. Granted he works long hours but still his office is at home. My office is only 10 mins away but im gone pretty much 8-5 mon thru fri and on-call which may require me to be away from home one day a week. Has anyone else had this concern? How do you address it? I trust my husband, I don't quite know how to trust the au pair though.

Not clear what your issue is - afraid your husband and au pair will hook up? Or worried because it's hard to work for a work-at-home parent?

Just pick a overweight/ugly au pair and you'll be fine!! (pun intended)

I travel for work overnight two nights per week and it's never occurred to me to worry about our au pair and my husband. Seriously. And we have had beautiful APs and seven of them.
DH is good looking but he's also 43. Our APs are interested in 20-something year olds, certainly not in someone who is the age of their fathers. Though honestly, I had no worries when DH was 30 either....

Personally, I simply wouldn't do. Guys love to joke with eachother about how much they enjoy their live-in girls.

an 18 mo and a new born is a lot for an au pair anyway.
You should hire someone older with more experience than an au pair.

It'd be nuts to hire an au pair for a toddler AND a newborn. I know some parents who are pulling out their hair, with two.

I totally agree that this is too much for an AP, though many do it. You have to hire someone who REALLY REALLY understands what they are getting into or you will be in rematch soon. Many APs think they understand but then get totally overwhelmed and depressed once they realize how much work it is. It isn't their fault; no one prepares them well.

We get extraordinaire au pairs for this reason. They are about $4-5k more per year, but well worth it.

What's their required minimum experience?

So you know that your husband won't be coming on to her, but you think she'll be attempting to seduce him at every turn? Right. Because all hot young Brazilian chicks are just DYING to bang a middle aged, married, father of two who doesn't even have the funds to hire a proper live out nanny. Dream on.
