We live in Alexandria (Fairfax County) and want to find a part time housekeeper/nanny/mother's helper. Right now my children are in preschool but next year my older son will be in kindergarten. DH or I or both get home by 4-4:30. We want someone who can meet our son at the bus stop, give him a snack/assist with homework, do dishes and assist with cooking and laundry. We need someone who can drive in case we cannot pick up our younger son from preschool.
We need the following schedule and some additional occasional eve/weekend babysitting: Mon 12-6 Tues 3-6 Wed 3-6 Thurs 3-6 Fri 3-6 I have found 2 types of candidates - immigrants who don't speak perfect English who are fine with the housekeeping but probably can't help with homework or students who don't want to clean. The better professional nannies seem to want full time work with health benefits. |

Yes, professionals earn good wages and normal benefits.
Look for a cleaner/cook who doesn't mind children to much. |

How about college or grad students? We are willing to pay a decent hourly rate $15-25 per hour depending on credentials. |
| I worked this a similar schedule as a college student. You're right college students don't want or need to do housework. I worked about 20 hours a week, $15/hour, and did nothing more than give snack, go over homework, and play/taxi. |
$25/hr is a decent rate. But highend nannies aren't trained in house cleaning. They can empty/fill a dishwasher, children's laundry, leaving the house as they found it. Most professional nannies are used to having a cleaning lady or crew. Most of my employers have had a fulltime cleaner/cook. |
OP here. We have a separate cleaning service come weekly. They do not come daily though. Ideally we can have one full time housekeeper/nanny but I already know nannies usually don't/won't/can't do deep cleaning. |
| If you want assistance with cooking and laundry, consider having the start time earlier. 3-6 sounds like a nightmare between both parents getting home, doing laundry, cooking, and helping with homework |
| You're better off getting a housekeeper, they're more flexible with organizing, cleaning and even childcare. nannies tend to fight you on every chore, even if the pay is high. |
Most nannies aren't "trained" in general. It doesn't take much skills to clean a house. OP you can probably find someone willing to do it all without going over $20/hour. I know plenty of people who have housekeeper nannies and pay them under so theres no need to jump way up to $25/hr. Just put a feel out and I'm sure you'll find someone good. |
