Is this a reason to not walk a child to park RSS feed

When I interviewed for a nanny, I was looking to hire someone active. I had a very sedentary baby nanny and I just felt like when child got older, I preferred someone active. The new nanny has been great (3 months in) but recently I've noticed a concern. She use to go on walks with my child but due to weather she would drive; now that its nice out and she can walk, she decidedas to not go to park. I noticed a pattern and asked her, why not take DD for a stroll or park and she said a stroll doesn't eh street is what they do but walking to the park causes my nanny foot pain. I noticed her shoes and she wears those cheap sandals that have no arch support. She has high acres, and park is 15-20 minutes walk-of course she's in pain. Is it too much trouble for her to buy a pair of good shoes, say from the walking co. Or sandals from there for support, so she can walk to park and not just drive? I walk ton park with my child, and almost everywhere if its nice out some we live so close to a lot of attractions and I don't expect nanny to do this all the time, but walking to park shouldn't be such an issue. Should I just take her shopping with me to buy a pair of good shoes for walking? I was going to just ask to buy some but I know they can be pricey. I do pay her well, but I realize she may not budge due to price. Nannies is walking 15-20 that big of a deal and if she still doesn't comply after shoes are bought then what?

On the one hand: shoes are a necessary part of the 'uniform' of being a nanny. I wouldn't wear 5 inch heels to work, because it isn't practical. The only time I'd wear sandals like you describe would be if we were playing with water in the backyard. So I really feel like the nanny needs to make better decisions about the shoes she wears, so she's able to get your child outside.

On the other hand: like you mentioned, good walking shoes are expensive. She might not be able to afford it.

Can you meet in the middle? Spend around $100 to buy the shoes for her, but take some money out of her Christmas bonus? If she buys through Zappos they can be returned for free if they don't fit right. Or she can go to a store like the walking company and get an arch support insert along with a pair of shoes.

If this is real...how out of shape is your nanny that a 15-20 minute walk is too much for her. I don't think shoes are the real issue here. I regularly wear flip flops and can walk-with a double stroller-for hours. She is just being lazy.

People please. This is one of the trolls on this forum. Can barely write English and her post is difficult to understand. It is obvious.

This is a ridiculous question.

Do not buy your nanny shoes. She is an adult. Let her make her own decisions about her footwear. If one of the requirements of the job is a walk to the park, then tell your nanny so. If she refuses, get a new nanny who will fit your job requirements.

If it isn't a requirement to walk to the park, then let her drive and let it go.

OP here. The nanny is not out of shape. Maybe she does have a foot issue and should see a podiatrist? For now, I would like to assume it is her cheap shoes inconveniencing her. I pay her well, so I don't see why she can't splurge on one good pair-for health reasons. For those calling this post a troll, you're the only trolls I see around here. Please don't waste my time, if you've got nothing better to do. I guess wasting your Sunday away is something you look forward to, so waste away.

You're right - it's about being lazy. I weight 235 and walk at least a mile a day, if not double that, during the work week.

You may pay her well but you don't know her home situation. What if she has a lot of debt? Is taking care of an elderly parent and paying their bills? What if to her that typy of splurge is unnecessary and a waste of money.
You say see a doctor - do you provide her with health insurance? Cause a doctor is expensive.

No one is wasting their time - you came here and posted. Don't like the replies-move on.

Oh I wear cheap shoes (mostly) -because I'm not a shoe person, I don't see why shoes cost so much. I wear flats, sandels, sneakers and so on -mostly shoes from payless or target. The mostexpensive shoes I wear are vibram five finger shoes. Which will retrain your feet to not need arch type shoes - because regular shoes are what caused the arch (and shin splints).

You can't tell her to get expensive shoes but you can expect her to get the child out. You should talk to her about your expectations and if they are not followed than you can take the next step.

Now go enjoy your Sunday - maybe get outside and go to the park with your child instead of being online

She probably just doesn't want to walk to the park. Lots of people prefer to drive, but you are perfectly within your right to schedule this walk as part of your kids' day.

I would talk to the nanny and tell her that this is important to you, and ask what you can both do to make it happen. If she says her feet hurt, you can bring up adding a "uniform allowance" or whatever to help pay for walking shoes. You should understand though, that this is not so much a benefit as it is a strategy for calling her bluff.
