If your nanny smoked pot.... RSS feed

What would you think? Now I'm not talking a nanny who reeks of reefer but one who may occasionally smoke on her days off whether live in or out. Would you fire? What if you are an mb or Db who smokes? Are the circumstances different?

What do you think, OP?
Do you smoke it to?

It really depends.

If you never new they smoked pot, then would it really be a problem? Obviously no one who smoked at work, or came to work high. I think drinking is more damaging than pot.

Mb here. Dh and I have smoked together since we met 5 yrs ago. I don't smoke around kids obviously but still do nonetheless. Hiring a nanny, I would want her to certainly be 420 friendly and not panic to know that we partake but I don't want a pot head.

I never smoked or did drugs, and that is an example that I model for my own children.

So yes, in my case, since I wish to model drug-free behavior, I would not hire a nanny who I knew smoked marijuana. In the same way that many parents might not hire a nanny who smoked or drank (because they want models of healthy behavior for their children.

However, from my years lurking in the DCUM forums, I bet that there are many parents who would probably join the nanny.

I feel the same.

Uh, children would never know if a nanny smoked pot or drank beer because they would never do it in front of them, so your "model healthy behavior" argument is fatally flawed. You can just say you're biased, it's okay.

I've been nannying for 10+ years and occasionally partake in smoking pot every few months. What I do during my free time is no one else's business, therefore none of my bosses have ever known. My current bosses probably wouldn't care, but again, none of their business.

While I agree that smoking pot is much less damaging than liquor, it still is the lesser of the two evils. (I live in CA where it is legal and I still feel this way!)

Regardless, if you and your spouse smoke it, it would be hypocritical to let your nanny go just because she smokes it on occasion.

I am personally against smoking weed, and I do not smoke it so for me, having a nanny who did would be a deal-breaker for me. However for you since your beliefs are different than mine, I think it would be quite unfair to let your nanny go due to her 420 lifestyle, etc.

A friend of mine (also an MB) smokes and found out her nanny was partaking in off hours (weekend) demanded nanny take a drug test. Obviously she failed and then she fired her. That is unfair especially seeing as the MB smokes at least twice a week. If my nanny smoked, I wouldn't partake with her but I would be open to it as I smoke when she is watching my kids sometimes. Therefore she can smoke when I'm watching them. And she is 24, she should live her life.

PP, I prefer to speak my native Spanish whenever the opportunity presents itself in public, at stores, in restaurants, at schools, in church. You would probably prefer that I speak English when I am around you and your family. Does that mean that you are biased?

Why is someone 'biased' because they disagree with the use of an illegal substance? If it was legal in my state, I wouldn't care. That's it.

Biased is the discriminatory feeling against one thing or another. You can be biased towards tattoos, food, drinks, dried out plants that are illegal, languages.

Can I piggyback on this post? MBs, would it make a difference if it was legal? I live in California and have a dr recommendation for medical marijuana, though I use it both recreationally and medicinally. Obviously I would NEVER partake during or before work and my current family is otherwise exceptionally pleased with my work performance (i know this because they are very generous with compliments of appreciation and bonuses). But I constantly worry they will somehow find out.

PP, I live in California as well. If I did not know about your drug use, then I would not mind. However, with several teenagers in the family who I do not want to smoke marijuana, if I found out about your marijuana use (though legal here) then honestly, yes, it would make a difference to me.

I would let you go because it is not the healthy example I want set by someone my children like, admire and spend time with. And if I was able to discover your use, then they would too -- teenagers are smart like that.
