What exactly makes a "high end nanny"? RSS feed

I'm constantly seeing posts on Craigslist for "high end nannies". Mostly agencies looking nannies to send in a resume.
I was just wonderig, what exactly makes one qualify as a "high end nanny"?

Thanks!

Nannies with education, child development, or related degrees or have attended Nanny/governess school and have many years of experience with multiple families.

This and they may speak multiple languages, have teaching/special needs credentials, as well as specialized skills that your average nanny does not.

Agencies usually have a screening baseline which includes X number of years full time (not babysitting or pre-age 18 experience), sometimes no employment gaps, willingness to have TB tests and all vaccinations, pass an english test, and provide X number of verifiable references. I wouldn't say that meeting this criteria makes you a high end nanny but it knocks out a fair number of nanny job seekers.

She has what it takes to educate not only the children, but the parents to (in child development). Granted, not every parent would want that, even if they could afford it. Even most pediatritions don't have much potty-training experience.

.High end nannies are 100% LEGAL with perfect English and a good amount of experience with awesome references to show for it. Also, someone who has completed CPR /First Aid/Early Child Education classes, etc. A former teacher who has all of the above would be a good candidate.

Is doesn't take a genius to potty train, LOL.

-BA in education, child studies, nursing, psychology or social work OR graduated from a top nanny school (United Kingdom has the best in the world)
-More then 5 years of full time experience as a nanny or teacher.
-Bilingual (spanish, french and Italian are favored more than others) with english as first language
-All the basic certifications; lifeguard, CPR, first aid, CNA etc
-Has a specialized skill; horseback riding (able to groom horse), plays an instrument (able to teach), athlete (able to train), artist
-Other training; Doula, midwife, newborn specialist etc

This is a true high end nanny's qualifications. These are the women who are paid 100k a year and have excellent benefits. Sadly most nannies don't meet all these requirements and still try to market themselves as such. being able to potty train, having experience or a BA is not enough to be considered "high end", you need a specialized skill and to be bilingual.

So a high end nanny will turn up her nose at feeding and walking the dogs or doing laundry but she'll muck stables and groom your horse? Learn something new everyday.

Hence the popularity of size 5 and 6 diapers.

That's normal for American children???

You asked what are a high end nanny's requirements, not what their job responsiblies are. 1. I don't think cleaning is a specialized skill that takes training or years of practice to become competent at. 2. Families who can afford to pay a nanny such a high salary normally have full time housekeepers and personal dog trainers. 3. Being able to groom and Saddle a horse is important to learning how to ride one.

I should probably add that having a smartass attitude isn't a trait most families seek...

I sincerely hope that a private nanny position would pay higher than a social work or nursing degree. Most health authorities pay a starting wage of $30.42 to social workers and RNs.

I would be concerned as to why somebody with a four year university degree would settle on being a nanny.

I wouldn't. Many nannies come here with college degrees from their home countries. A nanny job is an easy first job for many people and then they stick with it or use it to make connections. My childhood nanny was doing a part-time business program. He is now an executive at a major global corporation.

Our kids' nanny has a college degree. She has been a nanny for 12 years, but as our kids are getting older is furthering her own education and looking into transitioning to a new field. She has made great connections through us and the prior families and we are all happy to help her with her next step. That being said, a well qualified nanny can make more money than entry level jobs in many fields. Heck, we pay our nanny more than I made my first year out of law school. And that wasn't all that long ago.

No, they know how to get a horse ready to ride for when their charges want to ride, and then caring for it afterwards. This is assuming that the family is wealthy, the kids know how to ride and they own horses, which is the type of family that might have a high end nanny.

....For the same reason that someone with a four
year college degree would settle on being a teacher, and risk getting shot at, especially if working at some of our public schools.
