I won't be sitting that night, but I would absolutely charge more sitting on a holiday. If parents want the luxury of having a sitter on a night when most of us would have our own plans, they better be willing to pay through the nose for it.

+1 saw a lot of ads offering like $12/hour for kids from multiple families. Crazy!!

Me too. Absolutely insane! Yet they are probably going out that night and spending hundreds to attend a fancy party.

Nye means nothing to me. I don't overcharge for it. I'd be sitting home watching movies anyway. The only thing that has changed over the years is I request the kids come to my house so I don't have to be out and about with a higher than average number of drunks.

Even if all I would do is sit home and watch movies, I would still charge more as it is my time that I should be off otherwise. But since you are making them come to you, that probably helps. Even then though, you should still probably add a couple more dollars an hour.

BTW, it's not OVERcharging to charge a higher rate on NYE at all. It's simply what parents should expect if they want a sitter for that night.

I totally get charging more, but I'm fine giving the family I'm sitting for the regular hourly rate.

I normally only charge $2/hr-$3/hr more then normal. I currently make $16/hr with one of my families and I will be babysitting that night for a friend of theirs and will be making $18/hr for two kids.

Holy Shit.

I get $10 an hour no matter what.....no paid vacations or paid sick days.

If I'm not doing anything special on NYE anyway I won't charge my clients more than usual. That would be pretty pety,

Employers told me months ahead, I agreed. I work FT for this family, I don't party. So, not going to up the charge on a days notice. Super douchey.

Time and a half!!

Many hourly employees choose to work on holidays because they don't have much else planned. Doesn't mean they shouldn't still get time and a half. Same applies here IMO.

So only salaried employees (nanny, office, etc) socialize. That's stupid.

Anyone working on a holiday should be paid extra, plans or not. Don't let parents off that easy.
