+1 My employer went so far as to ask me not to get the kids anything, because then they'd be OBLIGATED to get me one. I almost walked out.

Nothing

I kind of wonder if some people get nothing because everyone knows the expectations are so high. So, if they can't do $1000+ and a gift, they just do nothing.

I was surprised to receive a $500 cash bonus since I've only been with the family for 6 months thus far. I want to give them something but I really can't afford much as that bonus went to pay off a tax debt I had. Would it be tacky of me to only give them a gift of baked banana bread or something like that?

Not at all tacky! Employees don't really give gifts to employers, but since the nanny/MB-DB relationship is more personal I think it's fairly common for nannies to give a small gift - homemade bread, photo book of the kids, engraved ornament for the tree, etc. so banana bread fits the bill!

2012 Holiday Bonus: $750
Weekly (net) Pay: $420 (it's only PT)
Other Holiday Gifts: 2 books (they know I love to read) and a sentimental card from parents and a cute one made by kids
Length of Time with Family: 2 years

I was shocked by the generousity this year. Not that they're not giving people, they are and most definitely towards me, but I know they've not had the best year, so the appreciation is really touching. And the card really said everything I needed to hear to know I'm appreciated and to continue giving 200% to this family!!

+1

But seeing as last year I didn't get anything my hopes are low.

I will let you know tomorrow ... Last year I got $100 and a dinner at a classy restaurant for my spouse and I where the bill came to $115. I was not happy so come this year I cut my hours - I gave my notice to quit but MB begged me to stay so now I work 2 days for them. I have a feeling she will not give me any bonus or it will be less than a hundred. If she gives me anything less than a hundred I am quitting. All her friends give their nannies a minimum of 3 weeks bonus, I am not asking even for a week's bonus but I want something decent. And No, I don't feel entitled, I just want to feel appreciated.
