Nanny here, been with the same family for 5 years. My birthday just passed, and now I'm not sure if they're upset with me and being passive aggressive about it. They've always done something for my birthday, appreciated but not necessary! I don't care about the gifts, it's the gesture that counts. This year, just a "happy birthday". I don't want to sound greedy, because I honestly could care less about the gifts, they usually aren't something I would use, but like I said before its the gesture that counts. What does this mean, that usually generous employers for the past several years, have now stopped being generous? I'm really worried that they're not happy with me, that this lack of a gesture is making a big statement!

It's unfortunate that we have to analyze any little variation in behavior at work!

Oh my God! same thing happened to me! It was so weird because my bosses usually went all out for my birthday. I was so hurt.

Maybe there's been a change in their finances that you are unaware of and they can't afford to buy the nanny presents this year.

If the gifts really aren't necessary why are you in a tizzy?

I didn't even get a happy birthday so bee glad you at least got that

Did they forget? I can barely remember my DH's bday.

Well you said the gifts in the past are things you wouldn't really use. Perhaps they sensed that you weren't very gracious or thankful about them and decided not to give you anything this year.

That happened to me last year at Xmas. After 6 years suddenly no bonus last year, when I got one every other year. It hurt my feelings, but whatever. They Dobt appreciate me anyways. I'm just treated as the help even after now 7 years!

Mb and DB never did anything about my BDay until the kids were old enough to remember my BDay!

Same thing happened to me this year, OP. I'm not worried that they aren't happy with me. They have a lot going on right now, so they get a pass. If everything else seems fine, try to let it go and not take it personally.

Did you do anything to earn a bonus or do you just expect it as an entitlement? Nanny positions do not last forever as kids grow up. You are an employee not an adopted adult child.

They may be in a position where they really no longer need to employ a nanny but are keeping you around. You enjoy a reduced workload and the same pay/perks so you hang around. If you are not doing things that make you valuable as an employee then you have no reason to expect a bonus for exceeding your performance because you are not doing this.

Perhaps they didn't have the money this year for a bonus and were embarrassed to bring it up.

I got a grocery store gift card that had been sitting on their counter for over a month....

Maybe they thought you didn't care or didn't like it. Maybe the problem is not them, but you. Did ever ever write them a thank you note? Doubting it.
