As a Nanny I’ve always gotten paid if i needed medical without making up hours; its the principal of employer to make sure their caregiver is healthy for performance. Just as employers take numerous’brakes’ for lunch, medical, nail appointments and such the nanny must be compensated if it is just an hour or so.

They are salaried workers, you are hourly. You should make up the hours, use leave or go unpaid.

You are wrong PP. I have always worked for hour; and I never ever been taken even a penny out of my pay; when I have needed a couple of hours for an emergency, dr. Or so. It doesn't matter you work by salary or hour.

And sorry to tell you; but I have also never requiere to make up those hours. Her employer is just Cheap. It's not worth for her, keep working for them. To OP. It's better to start for a new position, if the things are going on that way.

It's not being cheap and as a "professional" you get leave and you take leave for doctor's appointments. They should pay her for days they don't need her but if she is scheduled to work and cannot that is what sick leave is for. It does matter if you are salary vs. hourly and you clearly don't get how professional vs. hourly jobs work.

So “OK for me, but not for thee.” Got it, “professional.”

NP. I don’t make my nanny use any PTO for 1-2 hours for medical appointments, but often I do ask if she can stay late sometime in the same week. Salaried employees are typically allowed to do doctor appts and the like as long as they finish the work at some other time. If I can’t go in until 10am one day (whether cuz I have a doctor appt or my nanny does), I might be rescheduling a 9am call or pushing off responding to emails, but I can’t just not do it altogether. I think it’s nice of employers to offer that flexibility when they can but free hours here and there are a perk, not a requirement.
MUCH bigger issue is the lack of guaranteed hours. You can at least plan around a scheduled doctor appt and it’s a couple of hours (and also you should have some PTO you can use to cover it) but you cannot plan around people deciding on a whim not to pay you! It’s one unpaid day now but there’s nothing to prevent them from saying “we are leaving on vacation tomorrow for a month” and leaving you scrambling to make rent; this is especially likely around the holidays which are coming up very soon. Get guaranteed hours and some paid time off or find another job asap. Good luck.

The family deducted those hours from my paycheck. A few weeks ago, DM told me she had family in town and wont need me one day. I got those 8 hours deducted from my paycheck, also. In the 11 years working as a FT nanny none of my former employers never clipped me for medical nor days off given voluntarily by them. Have you dealt with this issue before? Would you email or speak directly to them that im not happy with that and want guaranteed hours. TIA for your advice!

Find another job.
The family doesn't care about you, unfortunately.

Thanks a bunch for all the advices. So after talking to them my salary is now guaranteed (whether they need my services or not due to family in town or fam takes vacation)they made a change to our contract and would not be penalized for medical appointments as I mentioned that I’ve never ever got clipped for it. I have used the 4 sick days they gave me a year and added 2 more days since they came down with COVID last summer and I used all my sick days. PTO remains 10 days.

Im at peace now, thanks again!!

So your employer docks you for every single doctor’s appointment you “slip out to?” I very much doubt it, unless you’re a Walmart cashier.

This is ridiculous; a Nanny here and never ever had to make up hours for medical. Everyone must get their health check, it’s very important for your body&mind as well as performance. Fair treatment to ALL!!!

That’s insane! How can you not get compensated for going to a check-up?!! Employers do go to doctors appointments and dental and more and best believe their company pays them regardless. This is about your HEALTH. For an employer not to pay you those few hours is just so petty &cheap!!

If I am leaving my office during my scheduled hours I have to take PTO (yes, even though I'm salaries), my employers don't care if it's for my HEALTH.
Yet another classic DCUM nanny scenario where y'all just don't think you have to operate like 99% of the rest of the workforce.

If an employee is being docked for a 2 hour medical appt it’s not worth to continue working for that cheap employer/company.

Wow, funny how you didn't mention you HAD sick leave and PTO and used it all. They were appropriate not to pay if you used your leave for the doctor's appointment.

Most government/businesses dock pay for medical appointments or you use sick/annual leave. OP used up all her leave. So, either she makes up the time OR she goes leave without pay.

Most people have to use sick or annual leave, or you have to make up the time. Not sure where you work to think otherwise.

Where did i say I use ALL my PTO(i use pto for VACATION)and why should i get penalized if they got covid in August and then flu last mont and I had to use my 4 days/32 hours sick leave b/c of their sickness? Not funny at all. Employers have UNLIMITED time off and UNLIMITED sick leave yet when they get sick they never tell me? You bet I’ll be taking sick leave anytime they get any contagious disease and that would not be deducted from my sick leave.

So wrong! In today’s time most employers understand sickness and contagious disease therefore no employer requires the employee to “make up time”

Nannies have to make sure they get their hours guaranteed, sick leave in place(about 7 days), 10 days of PTO and their annual raise. You have to put up with employers and sick kids so employer have to treat their caregivers right.
