NP. I don’t make my nanny use any PTO for 1-2 hours for medical appointments, but often I do ask if she can stay late sometime in the same week. Salaried employees are typically allowed to do doctor appts and the like as long as they finish the work at some other time. If I can’t go in until 10am one day (whether cuz I have a doctor appt or my nanny does), I might be rescheduling a 9am call or pushing off responding to emails, but I can’t just not do it altogether. I think it’s nice of employers to offer that flexibility when they can but free hours here and there are a perk, not a requirement. MUCH bigger issue is the lack of guaranteed hours. You can at least plan around a scheduled doctor appt and it’s a couple of hours (and also you should have some PTO you can use to cover it) but you cannot plan around people deciding on a whim not to pay you! It’s one unpaid day now but there’s nothing to prevent them from saying “we are leaving on vacation tomorrow for a month” and leaving you scrambling to make rent; this is especially likely around the holidays which are coming up very soon. Get guaranteed hours and some paid time off or find another job asap. Good luck.
