Nannies, are you getting several employment inquiries a week? RSS feed

People pay their housekeepers and lawn guys much more than those women who nanny our children. That is outrageous.

What are you referring to, PP? Your nanny “isn’t” what?

I’m a nanny that stopped working for a family that didn’t want to pay me at least 20 for 3 kids in a pandemic. I stopped 2 weeks ago and have been doing Uber eats averaging between $23-40 per hour after going on 6-10 hr shifts. Of course gas and mileage factor in but it’s deductible. I set my own hours and don’t have to worry about my health and being short changed by ungrateful cheap parents.

OP here. This is getting crazy. Yesterday I got four inquiries and today another three (I have a free profile up on Care.com but marked all time unavailable) Madness!

I don’t believe you. I recently hired a nanny at the pre-Covid rate, found through word of mouth.

How does that in any way negate what OP is saying? Good for you but it’s a fact that nannies - especially those with preschool teaching experience - are in incredibly high demand right now.

That is not true. There is a small subset of people who previously used daycare or preschool for childcare, who can afford a nanny at, for example, $20/hr. When nannies turn around and say “supply and demand - I now want $30/hr.,” those same people think “nah, I’ll just continue working from home and making due without childcare.”

The overall market for nannies who can command higher than average rates remains very small.

OP here. Every word I wrote is the God’s truth. The amount of inquiries have been something I’ve never experienced before. I can’t speak to salary since I’ve never gotten that far (I love my current job and have no intention of leaving). But the three-a-day inquiries continue.

I agree with supply and demand . No one is going to pay some ridiculous amount for a nanny . A lot of nannies are losing their jobs on the contrary because parents are losing their jobs and don’t want to pay a nanny when they’re at home with the kids . Don’t get a big head people . Most of the families on care.com are cheap , don’t want to compensate a nanny well . A lot of families who previously had kids in a daycare are not able to afford normal nanny rates and are under offering

+1. Yes, same here. What I found strange was all the first-time-parent requests for newborn care. I got three messages in one day this week from newborn parents which has never happened to me before.

I get tutoring requests daily now.

+2. Tutoring requests and a couple parents have asked if I was interested in doing a sort of preschool curriculum with their child and just two other children in their home.

I have a profile on care.com. I am not getting these love calls. What do I have to do? I am in DCA.

You should rewrite your profile as clearly something is wrong. And if you want a job, answer ads.

That is beyond cheap even without a pandemic. I am an ES teacher in MoCo who occasionally babysits for extra cash on a weekend evenings. I get $25 for 2 kids and $30 for 3. And that is babysitting only -- absolutely no other work. Playing board games, reading, making cupcakes, but much of the time the kids are sleeping.
