This made me chuckle. |
Our super fit gym every night AP last year could barely keep up with my three yr old and would always complain about how tired she was. She ate healthy, but also had bad habits regarding the way she looked down on others. All this to say that it’s important to look at the bigger picture. |
I will say that our overweight AP is not particularly active with our daughter, but goes to the gym every day. I think it's not possible to extrapolate any one experience to another though. It's going to be case by case. I think you need to be totally honest with her that your kids are active and you expect your AP to be active and ask her to think about whether thats really what she's looking for. |
Agree with previous posters about asking her about her activities and what foods she likes to make. We had a similar question when interviewing a larger AP and when we asked she said she liked reading, baking, and watching movies. When we asked her about what outdoor activities she enjoyed. She said she liked going for walks. Basically we got a low energy vibe from her so we passed. This time around we talked to a bigger Au Pair who you could tell was full of energy, played soccer, swam, went skiing, pictures of her on hikes and bike rides. We didn't match for other reasons, but I wasn't worried about her being able to keep up with my kids due to her weight. |
I’m a nanny who is 5’7 and 220 pounds. I wear an Apple Watch and walk at least 10,000 steps a day. On weekends I walk 15-25k steps. My problem isn’t exercise, I’m very active. My problem is a binge eating disorder and I like to eat in secret.
I used to be anorexic and bulimic. Back then I was 120 pounds but had no energy because I was always starving myself or throwing up or needed to be by the toilet for al the laxatives You can never tell with thin. Overweight it’s easy to place a label and say they’re lazy. |
Not all weight problems are caused by overeating. ![]() |
It would definitely be a negative to me for the OP to be so overweight, especially at such a young age. |
[b] Mine are. |
Nanny here. I’m 5’4”, 250ish pounds. I’m physically capable of chasing kids (2-teen) around the park as tickle monster when they don’t want to move and get their energy out in appropriate ways. I’m also strong enough (and padded enough!) to wade into a pile of boys whose roughhousing turned into hurting each other, then I’m capable of carrying a child of up to 100 pounds up two flights of stairs while they struggle. I model healthier food choices than their very slim parents. I also model fitness by going and working out with a physical trainer multiple times per week. If your AP makes healthy choices, weight should not matter. |
Total BS. If you are 250 lbs at 5'4" there is no way you eat as health as you claim and are as active as you claim. Per BMI (not perfect I know) you are morbidly obese. |
I am fat OP and used to be a Nanny. I may not want to physically run around with your kids but I loved swimming and bike riding, and would also happily take your kids to a playground where I can sit while they run around. If you like her for other qualities I think you should get her. |
Who are you to say this?! Ppl think they know what a certain weight looks like and what someone is capable of. Newsflash...they don’t and you don’t! If this nanny is claiming she can do all of these activities then you don’t get to sit behind a screen and tell her she can’t. You have no idea what she actually looks like and how her weight is distributed. Maybe you can’t do these things and you’re pissed bc someone else can but that’s on you. |
We had one au pair who was overweight who was SUPER slow. She totally could not keep up with the kids. Luckily my children were not the type to run out in the road, because she definitely could not stop them. She tried to go on a walk with all of us one time and just could not keep up (with the 3 year old). We did rematch after a few months for several reasons.
We had one au pair who was overweight who was super active and ran around with the kids all day and they could not keep up with her. So - it really just depends. I would check her profile pictures and see what kind of activities she posts pictures of? Active outdoors? Or indoors sitting around? Our active au pairs have had a lot of interests and activities that they are eager to talk about. Our slow/non-active au pair really didn't have that much in the way of interests/activities. Its easy to see that now... |
I’m well aware of my BMI, weight classification, and my caliper measurements (more accurate than BMI, when you have a decent amount of muscle!), thanks. My weight is the result of a health condition, not overeating or poor diet, and I love strength training. Most people can tell I’m overweight, but because I have so much hidden muscle, i do not look morbidly obese. My point was that appearances can be deceiving, so thank you for helping to prove that ![]() |
Maybe your idea of what this looks like is wrong. go here and look at 5'4'' and 250. Not that "HUGE" as you say... https://www.mybodygallery.com/search.html?gender=female&height=163&age=any&weight=113&pantSize=any&shirtSize=any&bodytype= |
