When your English is poor, you lack education, you have no computer skills, and your background is housekeeping in El Salvador, then $16 an hour in Loudoun County is pretty good.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Why? Special education assistants at Loudoun county schools make $14/hr, but she wouldn't qualify due to not having a high school education, required course work, or English skills. She COULD apply as a cafeteria worker, but that pays $12/hr....

The rate i pay her is in excess of what she would make outside of housekeeping. She used to work for one of the big national maid services and made 9.50/hr. You think she got 4 weeks paid vacation there or any paid vacation at all? Think she got a cash Christmas bonus of 1 weeks pay?

Please do suggest what career can command more than $14/15/16 when you have no HS education, limited English, and can't use a computer. Im not going to overpay just because I can. Going rate is about $15/hr here.

And no, she is not illegal. Her and her DH came here decades ago to escape the civil war.

So because she lacks education and her English is poor, you are taking advantage of her?

I'm a new poster but how is the lady being taken advantage of? The point is that she is making far above minimum wage, and probably a higher wage -- with the education and language skills she has -- than she could make anywhere else. Yes, someone with better language skills and education, experience etc. can probably make a bit more --- but $16 is more than fair.

The above poster is exactly right.

I am Hispanic and there is nothing racist about employing someone of any color or nationality for $16/hr for a blue collar job who probably otherwise would be working for $9/ hour at a fast food restaurant. Who do you think fills those jobs? How much do you think they are paid to work the window? If someone does not have a high school diploma, does not speak the language they should be grateful for a job that pays well above minimum wage. Even in my home country of venezuela you will be living like a peasant farmer if you don't get an education. There is a very good reason why I expect my children to go to college because no matter your color, here in the united states if you do not have a education, you won't have anything. And here, no matter your color, if you have an education, you can be anything you want. I was a dentist in venezuela with a private practice and had to completely start from scratch to practice here. But those are the rules and I played the game and it took my 6 years, but I'm back in practice.

I think the problem with you Europeans and many Americans, is that you expect something for nothing. You really are lazy. And you are talking out of your pale white asshole.

This is America. If you feel you are underpaid, you are free to seek employment elsewhere.

We have bought her a car and give her health insurance and overtime when appropriate. We want to make sure that we are paying her a good hourly wage as well. I realize there is a range with these things but it would be helpful to hear what people think she should be paid per hour. Thanks for help on this.

This is what we need. Where and how did you find her? How many hours a week does she work?
