What is a fair going rate for a full time housekeeper? RSS feed

Our housekeeper cleans, preps and cooks meals, and does a bit of evening babysitting. (The kids are older elementary age). We have bought her a car and give her health insurance and overtime when appropriate. We want to make sure that we are paying her a good hourly wage as well. I realize there is a range with these things but it would be helpful to hear what people think she should be paid per hour. Thanks for help on this.

Wow thanks for being so fair and providing your housekeeper what she needs to be happy with her job ( car, and good health). In my opinion $22/h should be a good at regular wage and $33/h overtime. Of course you could increase this if you feel like she is worth it.

You should clarify how many hours a week she works (4 hours a day is different than 9 hours a day 5 days a week) and where you are (DC?)

A housekeeper makes considerably more than a babysitter
$30.00/minimum.

This won't be helpful, but we are in Loudoun County. Hours are strickly 40 and under. We supply a car, no health insurance (her DH is a vounty employee), and pay her for 52 weeks a year, 4 weeks off. $16/hr.

I can't imagine supporting myself in Loudoun County on $16/hr. Can you?

Sure, in a two income household I could make it on that...

When your English is poor, you lack education, you have no computer skills, and your background is housekeeping in El Salvador, then $16 an hour in Loudoun County is pretty good.

With a little effort I bet you could talk that $16/hr down a bit even. I'd try for $14/hr.

Why would you be so obnoxious as to even suggest this? She's already underpaid at $16/hour and likely works her butt off. What you're suggesting is unfair and just mean. I feel sorry for anyone who works for you. Hell, I feel sorry for anyone who even knows if you these are the types of things you suggest.

I feel sorry for you that you think $16/hr is underpaid. For an illegal no less! That's more than double minimum wage, and the Loudoun County living wage calculation is $14.35........

$20-25/hour for 20-30 hours a week. Less per hour if more hours.

We pay $22/hour plus driving (prob another $30/week) for 1pm-6pm, includes driving kids, household errands (2-3pm), homework time, cleaning parts of the house some days, laundry 2x/week, noting inventory levels, prepping/cooking dinner.

You're a defective human. People without legal immigration status are still people. And their rent isn't less.

You should be ashamed of yourself.
