I think the credit card piece is odd, and I wouldn't ask (or feel comfortable providing) detailed personal information unless I was a final candidate.

I think you could respond along the lines of "I will be more than happy to provide you with anything you need to run a background check if you think I might be a final candidate for you, but I'd prefer not to provide detailed personal information until after we've met."

If they push beyond that I'd take that as a reason to walk away. If they are ok with that response (as they should be) then you can have the first meeting and judge better whether you think they're just nervous and new to hiring a nanny or whether they are fishy in some way.

Asking for your personal credit card bills is not an indication of just being "nervous and new". It's a clear sign of boundary problems. That's far different than hiring someone who will handle your bank accounts. In that case, a credit report may be appropriate, but certainly not your personal credit card bills.

The DL maybe, but a credit card bill....??!

Sounds like they are planning on stealing your identity.

Don't even communicate with these scammers again.

Exactly. Report them to the police.

No employer, and especially a potential employer has any right to your personal credit card statements. None.

I couldn't agree more w/you on this PP!

There is no valid reason why a prospective nanny should EVER have to submit her credit card info. Bar none.

It is common sense in this day & age of identity theft to be extra-weary of letting anyone have access to your personal information.

This is really a no brained.

Look you have every right to your opinions and guess what you do not have to supply anything to an employer, you do not have to go to the interview and you do not need to take a job. No worries I get it, and I am not giving advice I am trying to explain why an employer might ask for certain documents, if the OP is not wanting to do this then fine. If you do not think as a candidate you are comfortable with what is being asked then OK.

I am trying to explain to you in this industry, and the place you are wanting to work is unique, and employers are trying to be careful who they hire. There would be good reason that if an employer is thinking you have maxed out all your cards, have not had employment and down on your luck, they may think that stealing from them is a red flag. They may not ever even ask to see such documents but they may ask the question to see how you respond.

If you are worried about identity theft and you are not comfortable with the person interviewing you then end it there and move on.

You just don't seem that bright, 14:20. Or perhaps you're just naive.

Professional nanny here for over twenty years-DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY FINANCIAL INFORMATION TO A STRANGER!. It is a scam to hack your information. If a good background check isn't enough for them, run. Like the hills.

Well if you as an employee are to have access to someones children/ or the homes account information then the employer may ask for your info and again, you can choose not to give it to them.

Usually it is high profile positions that ask for that kind of info and a professional, experienced candidate will be able to vet that employer and make an informed decision. Again any candidate can choose to not disclose info that they are not OK with.

And I agree with that and I also said in my posts that I would not offer such info unless there is an offer on the table. Yes you should not give info to a stranger

You don't understand what I'm saying. If they have done a background check on you, signed out contract details, you've worked for them for a few weeks and it all looks good even then I would be as hesitant about providing them your personal financial history unless they have provided you with theirs.

Then I think we are saying the same thing. When I was a nanny, I was never asked about credit and yes I agree there are scammers out there asking for this. What I am trying to say is if I am going to be working for an employer that is giving me access to there bank account so I can make purchases and keep accounting of the house expenses then I can see why an employer may ask for my credit info. I am just trying to offer a reason for why an employer may ask about my credit.

And to answer the OP no it is not common to be asked for credit info but there are some positions that may ask for it.

Hello,
Nannies do not run your general household finances. Call her what you want, but that is not the job of a nanny. Perhaps personal assistant?

To 14:20-

Are you for reals??!
Your logic on this is so very flawed that I truly wonder if you are making up nonsense to stir up another notorious DCUM debate.

A). Just because someone has maxed out their credit cards does not equate = thief.
It is not a red flag in any shape or form that said individual will steal from another.
Flawed logic = Unfair stereotype.

B). Nannies do not have access to family bank account info.
They do not pay family bills nor do they do any family accounting activity.

No offense to you, but you are just W-R-O-N-G on so many levels on this.

Well said. It's astounding that certain people here don't understand what a nanny is.
