President Obama gave the feds a half day off

Fed mom here. Our nanny has been with us for 4 years and I have always extended any early leave that I was granted to my nanny except one 2 hr dismissal when I really needed to get something done before I got home.

This goes for all snow days as well. Only once did she have to come in and that was when OPM cancelled based on a prediction that the conditions would be bad (and it turned out to be particularly mild) and my boss who was working in NY had all of this senior officers and counsel on a conference call (so she needed to watch my kids).

This year, she told us that she wanted to take LWOP for this week through New Year's (so we paid her for 2 paid holidays) and save her leave until February when she takes her annual trip back home. We found out about the 1/2 day off after she told us, so we didn't extend the 4 hrs. However, in the past when she took a few hours off her or there (rarely misses work) we haven't docked her for that.

We've also been very flexible with her about her leave. My husband has way more leave than I do (used a lot up for maternity leaves) and so he's able to take off generally whenever (she gives us ample notice) our nanny takes her 2 week trip home.

OTOH we haven't traveled too much as a family recently--youngest is now 1.5 yrs old--so she hasn't had many days off like other nannies have due to the families taking extra vacations etc. This year, we'll be traveling at least 3 times, so she'll probably get 2 weeks of extra paid leave.
