I am not going to read the other replies. You DO NOT change the babysitter for the damages. She was there working at your home and damaged your mailbox when leaving your employ. |
Good points by above two posters. |
You've never bumped something in your car? If not, you are a better person than most. The fact that she hit a mailbox while backing out of an unfamiliar driveway at night doesn't mean she is an unsafe driver. If I made a mistake like this and you callede incompetent, told me you wouldn't use me anymore and asked me to replace your mailbox, I'd tell you where to stick it. This is hardly incompetence. |
I would never eect it. Accidents happen. Is there any was to do a temporary repair. If it is wood you may be able to use some metal brackets to fix it. |
Another MB who would not ask for or accept money. |
+ 1 I agree. |
I wouldn't ask her to pay, but I wouldn't let her drive my children around either. |
Have you not ever bumped into something in total darkness in a new place? |
The babysitter left me a voicemail saying her husband wanted to fix the mailbox and they were both on their way to my house. The DH came, looked the damaged mailbox and said would be back. After an hour or so I got a knock on the door saying a new mailbox was up. Part of me felt very terrible that they went through all the trouble despite me declining the compensation.
I would not have gotten someone to help me fix it that quickly so I was appreciative for the gesture nevertheless. I have a lot of respect for this couple for taking responsibility even when it was not required of them. To be honest I would not have thought of her differently if she had not insisted on fixing the mailbox. However, as a matter of principle, if I was to damage someone's mailbox or any other property I would pay for it. |
The fact that she his any mailbox backing out of any driveway at any time of day or night proves she is incompetent.... mailboxes are not situated in the middle of a driveway, they are in the grass. I don't need to know where a mailbox is to not hit it. |
Go away. |
Most mailboxes are inches away from a driveway. It would be very, very easy to swipe one backing out of an unfamiliar driveway at night. It's not incompetence. You have extremely high standards. Let go a bit. |
So she had her husband come out and fix it and you still want money because of your "principles"? This will not be a long relationship. I'd be surprised if you make it to the end of the year with her. |
No, I have never bumped into anything with my car, whether in total darkness or broad daylight, in a new place. Good drivers don't bump into things. |
I think that's great OP. It sounds like your nanny felt compelled to make things right, regardless of you declining compensation, because that's just the kind of person she it. And it sounds like that's the kind of person you are also, so hopefully this means you've found someone who will be a great fit for you. |
