The DH came, looked the damaged mailbox and said would be back. After an hour or so I got a knock on the door saying a new mailbox was up. Part of me felt very terrible that they went through all the trouble despite me declining the compensation.

I would not have gotten someone to help me fix it that quickly so I was appreciative for the gesture nevertheless. I have a lot of respect for this couple for taking responsibility even when it was not required of them.

To be honest I would not have thought of her differently if she had not insisted on fixing the mailbox. However, as a matter of principle, if I was to damage someone's mailbox or any other property I would pay for it.

So she had her husband come out and fix it and you still want money because of your "principles"?
This will not be a long relationship. I'd be surprised if you make it to the end of the year with her.

PP Do you have a problem with comprehension?

Have you not ever bumped into something in total darkness in a new place?

No, I have never bumped into anything with my car, whether in total darkness or broad daylight, in a new place. Good drivers don't bump into things.

I have a perfect driving record. I've never even been pulled over and even I have bumped something.
I don't believe you.

OP did not accept cash. The nanny and her DH bought a new mailbox to replace the damaged one and the DH put it back in place.

Agreed.

I wouldn't let her pay, and I'd be concerned if she was driving my kids as part of her job.

I could not possibly care less what you believe.

The fact remains. Good drivers don't bump into things.

Does it really need professional installation? My neighbor's teenage son knocked down my mailbox when parking on street... They apologized and then installed it for me. The father did it, but teenager helped. Does your babysitter have a male father / boyfriend / friend who can install it? I'd them allow it if she offers. I would not take money though...

It happens...even to good drivers. I still think you are lying.

And she's still here whining about it.
