Agree. Always apply.

You shouldn't "always apply" for welfare. There should rightly so be a sense of shame in requiring welfare and you should apply for it just because you were let go from being a nanny. Any nanny can EASILY find a new job, either as a nanny (easy) or in any other service/sales field (very easy) such as McDonalds, JC Penny, etc.

Sorry, but you are stupid if you think unemployment is welfare. I've known some rich people collecting unemployment, while the nanny was providing childcare for them.

No "rich" person is going to go through the effort of collecting unemployment for $370 a month.

Do you have a crystal ball? How do you know everything?

Can we stop responding to the nanny-hating troll? Just ignore it.

Most states have a minimum amount of time you have to have been employed before you qualify. You'll have to find out if that's true in VA, and if you reached the minimum.

This is true, but your previous employment may be able to count toward this eligibility.

I'm not a nanny, but I switched jobs to a nonprofit that told me they were funded for 2 years and surprise! -- they gave me a pink slip a month later. I researched applying for unemployment, and I would have been able to apply based on my previous work credits.

To the PPs calling this welfare, that's a narrow-minded view -- unemployment benefits is an insurance that's designed to be a safety need for employees. Insurance exists to protect you in case of rainy days. A nanny suddenly laid off in a city this expensive is the very definition of a rainy day.
