I'm not 11:11 but I am PP MB who said I'd be annoyed. To be clear, I wouldn't be annoyed she needed to take care of her health. If she told me she needed to have emergency surgery tomorrow I'd do everything I could to help her in addition to NOT being annoyed. A tonsillectomy is not an emergency. I know this as someone who has had a tonsillectomy myself. She wants to get it done before the holidays but that does NOT constitute an emergency. |

OP again. I do understand it is crazy around the holidays. I need this procedure done. The only time was to schedule for next week or the week after because my dentist will be off for the holidays. The week before, DB will be traveling and MB has trial court. I knew it would be a crazy time for MB and I don't want to put her in a sucky position then. That is why I asked for next week off.
To the pp, Many families give a number of sick days for benefits just like they do paid holidays and vacation. I have not taken any time off. You must not work with young children. I had a stomach bug twice from my charge in my last position and worked through it. You don't seem to know what you are talking about. I do understand what you mean but I am not severely sick 5 times a year I will be sure to check on that if I am, mom. |
I would like to note that this surgery is necessary. I have has numerous tonisil infections which often bleed. It's dangerous. For notice, I told MB I can push it back if necessary for after the holidays. She said they would be too busy then so do it now. Also they give me 24-48 hour notice for extra care needed. Never more than that. |
Ok now I have to call troll (which I never do). A dentist does NOT do a tonsillectomy. |
That was a typo. I meant DOCTOR. He is a board surgeon and a family friend. I only trust him and will not use anyone else. |

NANNIES TAKE NOTE - Being a nanny is a serious job, you have to be professional, even though it seems just like advanced babysitting. If you want a job that you can just call in sick randomly and no once cares be a cubicle jockey and shuffle papers. When you sign on to be a nanny you are joining a team where you are an integral part and people are relying on you.
Do your surgery on Saturday and be ready to come in Monday. |
lol - thank god I have an awesome relationship with my nanny! As I said, I would NOT have a problem with my nanny taking off but would be a "tad" annoyed only getting one week's notice. so I'm a b witch for being a little annoyed? Jesus - thank god my nanny is not you! in the real work force, there are times when you get annoyed with your employee. Just like my boss was annoyed that my maternity leave came during a crunch period. That didn't mean he made me come in or held it against me.. And for the record OP - I interpreted tonsils as more flexible scheduling vs emergency. So yes, I would not have an issue with you taking the time off. |
I'm an infant/toddler nanny and know exactly what I'm talking about. Children get sick and something's pass viruses but if you have a strong immune system than you won't be affected as often. The way you worded you sick days it sounded like you normally get sick 5 times a year and use them all up. Maybe I read it incorrectly but I still stand by initial response, which was actually meant nicely but taken the wrong way. Next time try not to be such a bitch and maybe your employers will respect you more. <--that was meant to be rude. |
Except for when we're talking about pay and benefits. Then we're glorified babysitters, whose contributions are minimal, and who are a dime a dozen right? The inconsistencies on this board are dizzying. |
How does it sound like OP gets sick 5 times a year and uses them all up? OP stated she never missed a day in 9 months. She also wrote that she worked through stomach bugs that the child gave from her previous position. Even people with strong immune systems gets sick. You don't sound very bright dear. |
| lol I call troll because she said dentist and then said it was a spelling error ... either a troll or not the brightest bulb in the shed, in which case maybe her MB is better off without her |
| The saying is the sharpest tool in the shed. |
| Who. Are any of you to determine whether OP's operation is necessary? She and her MD made this decision. I knew someone who had an exploratory surgery last Dec. 23. It is her choice, not the MB's choice as to when the nanny has surgery. |
Actually, your boss does get to approve time off. People have even lost jobs due to emergencies, which is really sucky. But there are lots of kinds of surgeries that are urgent (need to get done soon), but not emergencies (need to get done immediately). The best practice for an employee is to provide as much notice as possible for a scheduled surgery, at least as much as is usual for non-sick vacation days. |
Only emergency surgeries are scheduled on weekends. Also, some MD's only perform surgery on specific days. As for nannies being professional, why don't they receive professional pay? I a m not a nanny but $18.00/hr is not professional pay. Also, nannies are not considered professional because they are paid hourly. |
