| Ummm never. They don't even ask where we go and if I called to ask permission everything we left the house they would probably fire me. My bosses are super busy professionals and I keep a detailed nanny log which they read at the end of the day. They know I have common sense and I'm not going to take the kids to the mall or let them watch tv all day. They don't need to be updated all day long a d leave me to do my job. I've been with them 8 years but they were like this from the beginning. |
Yes, I try to give thorough updates when MB gets home. We don't go out very often, the kids usually have friends over since they have a pool. We only go out to the local cookie store/frozen yogurt shop once a week or so. I think you're right about it being more about the kids, since the teen can behave very aggressively and disrespectfully when he doesn't get his way. Nope, no younger kids. I think it's mostly because they have several activities during the school year they need to get driven too, plus neither are mature enough to stay home alone for 10 hours during summer. The one time they had to stay home alone during a snow day for a few hours in the morning until I was able to get off class to go, kids left the house to play with neighbors, after MB specifically told them to stay inside. |
That makes sense - I bet it's more about the kids in that case. You may want to try discussing this with your MB and asking her if she has specific concerns that you can update her on through the day via text so she doesn't have to worry. That has the dual benefit of letting you give updates on your schedule while she gets the info she needs. |

They only call or text if they forgot to tell me something (that usually would be in an email in the morning for after school care) or if I have called them to ask a question for something I am not sure the normal routine about. Otherwise no calls or texts. We talk at the end of the day. This is for kids ages 2-13.
With positions that I get paid cash weekly, some like me to tell them through text my weekly pay and any extra money we spent, so the total amount owed. They find it helpful so they know the amount when getting home (it is usually always around the same amount anyways though). That would only be the one day though, not everyday that week. |

When I looked after three preschoolers who went to nursery every morning till 1pm, the mom would always call soon after we got home to check up how they were, what their day was like, etc. One of the kids was a bit on the wild side so there was often something out of the ordinary to report.
Now I look after four elementary school kids 3-8pm, and the mom would sometimes give me a call when she knows I'm walking to their house to let me know anything I need to know or just to catch up. I babysit random-ish kids as well, and parents who don't often leave their kids text or ask me to text once the kids are in bed, just to know that everything went fine. I don't take it personally, I know they only worry their precious darlings might be scared and not used to me at first. |

MB here. I call or email to check on things if a child has been sick, or if I'm going to be a few minutes late, or if I'm stopping at the market on the way home and I'm checking to see if we need anything.
With all of the possible reasons why I might check in, I think I do so once or twice a month. This has always been my MO after our nanny's first week with the then babies, 3 years ago. I don't have the time or energy to worry that much while I'm working - that's why the kids have a nanny! |
Why on earth would you hire someone to take care of your child you do not trust? |
