I’m in my mid thirties and rewatching it now, I wonder what all these women were doing in their 20s. The problem with the show is that Carrie and Charlotte are more like twenty somethings. But I love the show. And I don’t hate Carrie, but she is self centered.

Carries mistakes with big seem like ones I made in my twenties. Not my thirties.

This was my first thought on my first watch 20 years ago when I was on maternity leave in my early 30s - I never had HBO so I didn’t watch it when it ran and it had just ended. I had friends who were making those mistakes and having those conversations while we were in college.

Guys, her character was the centerpiece of the show. She wasn’t a bad friend because she interrupted the other three, and steered conversation to herself (Yes IRL this makes for a bad friend) Rather, it was device to keep the story primarily centered on C, while the other characters got satellite storylines, that sometimes were allowed to eclipse whatever was going on w Carrie. I think the writers did a great job giving the other characters meaty/fun story lines.
We can all recognize elements of the characters in our rl friends which made the show so appealing to women in their 20s-30s (twenty years ago).

I loved the show, and I think it has held up well. When my adult dd watches, I can’t walk by without finishing the episode with her. There are scenes that are touchstones for me - you all know the ones I’m talking about. It’s probably related to where I was in life when the show first came out. I loved the final episode. I think the first movie was true to the characters and entertaining.

I couldn’t stomach the recent spin off. I watched two episodes. (I’ve even blocked the name of it).

I just think the show has aged incredibly poorly. It's a time capsule, kind of like Tang.

I had a friend of a friend who tried very hard to act like Carrie B when we were in our 20s. Self-obsessed, not truly interesting, wore a little horseshoe necklace, promiscuous. I ran into her at 40 and she’s the same: dull, entitled, big-headed.

Charlotte has always been my favorite. She’s a neurotic mess. Carrie bothered me because she’s an awful friend and has no loyalty.

I really wish we could get away from blaming misogyny anytime a woman isn’t liked.

I watched the show when it originally aired and Charlotte was my favorite. I don't think anyone is following a "trend" when they're deciding who they like or not. It's probably more due to the fact that as people have gotten older their opinions have changed. I was a different person when I watched the show the first time. I've seen it through twice and if I watched it again now I may have different feelings about the characters than I did those times.

I can find someone annoying without having to prove that they're a bad person. Haven't you ever met someone and just not wanted to be friends with them? I found Carrie to be pretty annoying and vapid. I understand why she may have acted like that, but that doesn't mean I have to like her just because she has a reason for being that way...
