I had my third and final baby earlier this year and have been really diligent about eating habits and exercise. I've lost 40 pounds in the last 6 months and just need to lose 4 more. And I'm having a hard time with these last few pounds, which I know is common. I do the 16:8 intermittent fasting 5 days a week which has really helped me lose 6 pounds in the last two months. But these last 4 pounds are pretty stubborn.
Any recommendations on tried and true techniques for these last few pounds? I'm back in my old clothes but they are just a tad snug. I work in an office, so am sitting much of the day. I usually work out in the morning- 4 times a week. I run 4 miles twice a week, and do a cardio (hour long) class at the gym twice a week. |
Contents have shifted during the flight.
Four pounds is nothing. You could get a small stomach bug, or take a particularly large dump, and the number on the scale would read what you want it to read. Why are you arbitrarily deciding that Number X is your perfect weight? If your body is settling in at 144, you don't NEED to be 140. Now, if your doctor is telling you you need to be 140, that's one thing. Anyway, my best advice if you really want to drop a few more pounds: 1) No alcohol. If you're serious about 4 pounds, you need to only drink on very special occasions, and only one drink. 2) No eating after 7:30 p.m. Have dinner, have a small portion of dessert when you want to, then that's it. NO late-night snacking. 3) Only eat "investment carbs," make sure those choices are really worth it. Half of a good deli bagel? Yes. A sad conference room bagel? Hell no. 4) Cut your portions by 1/3 until you reach your goal weight. |
Fast all 7 days, and no snacking |
40 lbs in 6 mo is incredible. Give yourself a dang break! It may come off a little slower now that you are smaller and have a lower metabolic rate now. |
May need to switch up workouts a little. Try strength training and lose the scale for a while! I promise strength training will firm you up even more. You got this OP, but do be easier on yourself! |
I think if you punish yourself to lose 4 pounds, this is likely to have the opposite effect you want, by making you more likely to regain. Why not just be happy with your loss and work on maintaining now? |
This doesn't sound like a way to establish a healthy, maintainable weight. It sounds like a good way to lose 5 lbs, then regain 15 lbs. Ask me how I know! |
OP here. Thanks for the words of advice and encouragement. I'm curious- why something like the above might have the opposite effect? Does it crash the body's metabolism? |
Reduce carbs, they’re still a bit high. |
After I had a baby, I also lost about 40lbs in 6 months, but for me it was those 3 lbs that never came off. Sure, if I starved myself for a couple of days before a big event, or got a stomach bug they would go away, but they always came back. However, it wasn’t hard to maintain my weight with those 3lbs (until I got pregnant again...) |
This has made the biggest difference for me for 10+ years and has helped a ton in keeping the weight I finally lost in my late 20s off all that time without feeling like I'm starving or depriving myself. So, yes, I will have homemade mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, or a sandwich at my favorite deli when I'm in NY for work, but no need for those tiny store bought muffins in left in the office kitchen for anyone to have or a slice of Little Caesar's pizza put out for the grownups at a kid's birthday party. |
This has also made a difference for me. I used to eat cakes etc at work to be polite and fit in. I don’t bother anymore. It has helped control my weight. |
I did 16:8 to lose weight and it worked at first and then stopped working. You may want to switch to a very low calorie diet and also eliminate refined carbs. You could be one month or less from your goal. |
Any or combination of the following depending on what you have been doing so far:
Cut carbs Increase cardio Cycle carbs Intervals Fasted cardio Reduce calories further Add a high carb day I agree with PP that it is likely you will gain back once you stop doing this so, contrary to what other PP said, you may actually want to get lower than your goal weight. |
