Hauling around a BGE to competitions would be silly, even without taking into account the risk of damage. That's not what it's made for. It would be like bringing a Bentley to a road racing circuit like Lime Rock. Most serious competitors on the circuit have a dedicated smoking rig.

Exactly. Plus a WSM is nowhere near as versatile as a BGE. WSM is a great smoker for the occasional weekend warrior, but it's not a match all-in for the BGE.

We have one- burgers and steaks are delicious. Better than most restaurants.
Egg is a little tricky to master- I wouldn't buy a lot of accessories until you learn to control the heat.
We make chicken, planked seafood, red meat, and are just now trying to master grilled pizza. We take it a step at a time.

I have both and hands down use my WSM for smoking and my BGE for grilling. Quite honestly the BGE was a waste of money for me. Kind of a pain in the ass.

First, thank you 20:02 and after I reply to this I'll go check out every item you mentioned. The shoes/shorts/beer may be a great stop-gap while I figure out the BGE as I'm running out of time.

Meanwhile, can someone tell me what size BGE would be appropriate?

Get the egg! DW here and I love it! We have a large and are a family of four. DH just cooked BBQ for a large 4th of July party and had plenty of space. You will be fine with a large. The XL is huge.

Don't forget you will need a nest (BGE sells them) or some sort of table for it to sit on. Factor that into the budget.

We had a nice gas grill and ended up selling it a year after we got the egg because we didn't use it once. The flavor is that much better.

I am sure its a great grill!

But it is an appliance. Do you want a dishwasher (even to coolest) for your birthday?

Hey Rocket Science -

I am sure you could figure it out...

...if you are the type to have a spreadsheet that records temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, type of coals, amount of coal, air flow, time of day, sun angle, moisture content of meat, type of meat, and a few variables that only you think are important and are willing to have literal knock down fights over it, and you do that like 5x a month then you are ALL OVER IT.

That is "rocket science" for those folks who love the art of cooking in this way.

Of course, most of us just want to come home from day jobs and have fun.

So - which are you?

In the meantime, I hope everyone is buying some sweet AllBirds and Hybridizers.

PS - this is my first angry post on DCUM - how did I do? Was it too obviously passive-aggressive? Should I just have asked about the PP SES?

You sound incoherent and possibly drunk. You are wayyy to emotionally invested in the BGE. Maybe a new hobby?

Not even close to the same

I love my kamado (egg-shaped ceramic) cooker. I was going to get a Green Egg but went with Vision because it was larger for the same price. If you are only grilling (cooking hot), you wont like an egg because it has small grill surface area. If you/your husband wants to bake or smoke, you will like the egg. I make pizza with mine too. I would go for the large because you need enough space for ribs/chickens. Also, smoking is a little effort (6 hours for ribs/12+ for pulled pork), so you tend to make a lot at a time for company (I cook Thanksgiving turkey on my grill).

I would start with the just the egg and get a heat shield (convEGGtor) which is needed for baking/smoking. Also, you will need the stand (or nest) because outside of the egg gets really hot and you don't want to just sit it on your patio/deck.

As for cooking, the benefit of an egg over other grills is that you can really control the oxygen to the coals, so you control temperature and also kill the fire when you are done cooking. For example, shut off the air after I finish cooking, so there is a lot of charcoal left that I relight the next time. I end up not using a lot of charcoal during a month.

10:21 here again - by the way, an Egg or other Kamados are really, really heavy, so you will need some help to get it home.
