We used to live next door to someone who swore by it...he ended up getting two. I recall he had two different sizes.
We are a family of four, and my DH likes to grill in the summer. We've currently got a gas grill. 1) What are the pros and cons? (is cleaning an issue? Or cooking time?) 2) If you think it's a good idea, what size should I get? We are a family of four, and don't often have guests (but if we do, it's usually another family of four, but we often do take out then). So probably just need to think about it in terms of our family only. 3) I've heard you can buy them cheaply somewhere else, would that be ebay or where? Thank you! |
Yes. Best gift I ever gave my husband. You can use it as a regular grill, but also as a smoker to book meats low and slow (like brisket or pork should for pulled pork).
I think we have the XL, with the base. Got it years ago at Strosniders (I think). You can find them on sale sometimes -- just google and see what you can find. |
You already have a grill, so get him a Weber Smoky Mountain for smoking meats. It costs $300. That is $550 less than the typical Big Green Egg.
Take that $550 and it on: - a pair of allbirds for him, the most comfortable shoe ever - a pair of prana hybridizer shorts for him, the most comfortable shorts ever - a six pack of Stone IPA and a 4 pack of dogfishhead 90 minute beer - a starter kit for his Smoky Mountain: a wireless thermometer, a bag of charcoal briquette, a bag of hardwood charcoal, a bag of applewood and a bag of mesquite - keep the remaining $300 for yourself ...I used all these products today |
It gets great reviews, but will your DH be ok with charcoal after grilling on a gas grill? It's more work. |
I agree! Love my Smokey Mountain! I cooked 3 butts and 4 racks of ribs in mine this weekend. I love charcoal grilling ans smoking. |
Ok with charcoal? A gas grill is pointless. Its like cooking in the broiler. If you have functioning taste buds, there's no comparison. Cookung on gas grill is like baked ziti to Italy. |
My friend told me he's very happy with his knock-off Egg, much cheaper than the real thing but apparently just as sturdy and well-made. |
Am I the only one who opened this thread thinking it was some delicacy that was actually a big, green egg? Like an ostrich egg or a quail egg? |
Don't get the knock-off if you can afford a real BGE. There is a difference and you only live once. |
What is different? |
OP here,
First, thank you 20:02 and after I reply to this I'll go check out every item you mentioned. The shoes/shorts/beer may be a great stop-gap while I figure out the BGE as I'm running out of time. Meanwhile, can someone tell me what size BGE would be appropriate? |
Nope. I was thinking green eggs and ham, or maybe a candy egg. |

You don't have to sell me on charcoal over gas. But OP said her DH currently grills with gas, which is easy and no mess. I know my DH would prefer a gas grill for the convenience. |
OP here again; just wanted to let 20:02 know that I bought the shoes and two pairs of shorts (both colors).
Now, I'm assuming for a family of four, I need the medium size? (4 steaks)....anyone think this is the wrong size? Also...if I buy it, what *should* I buy with it? the Egg Mates (shelves), the Nest, the conveggtor...the mitt? |
