Favorite names you don't hear every day

Not saying that an African-American-sounding/reading name is a negative, but it's foolish to think that most people will recognize it as Irish and not think of it as another in a long string of African-American names beginning with De.

Except that the second part is clan. Like klan. De Clan? Would anyone really think an African-American person would choose that?

Brilliant!

Only very stupid people.

You're joking, right? Card-carrying non-stupid person here, and I absolutely thought Declan was African-American when I saw it here.

Interesting list. Of course, it can be used on both sides of this discussion--either, "See, Declan isn't on this list?" or "See, Declan resembles many, many names on this list."

It is an Irish name, yeah, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sound like an AA name. Perhaps especially to people who aren't AA.

There are plenty of Irish Declans (I found from Google), but there is also Declan Jogi .... from Zimbabwe.... http://www.discoveret.org/force/html/jogi.html

PP here. I'd like to add that Elvis Costello's given name is Declan.

This thread should be renamed the Declan Debate!

Also, Declan sounds like "The Klan". Not a good name.

I get the sense that the hijack of this thread has been motivated by the mother of a recently baptized "Declan" who is now horrified, perhaps concerned is a better word, that her DS may have a name that sounds AA.

Evelyn or Eve
Sadie
Marisol (like Mary-soul)

Boys:
Rafael
Sebastian
Levon (I love the song by Elton John and if we have another boy that may actually be his name)

I like the song, but at the risk of re-opening that can of worms - Levon sounds like an African American name. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Nope. I'm the one who posted Declan as a possibility and this is the first time I'm posting since then. I'm horrified that the name has caused such a silly conversation. My apologies to the OP.

Yep. It is sad sometimes to see how people really think. "Many African American names, eh?" I can't think of one in my family or that I've known growing up. And I have a huge family. 17 aunts and uncles and countless amounts of cousins. I would be interested to know how many anyone has personally met. Come on, let's back up that stereotypical assumption.

There's a Declan in my kid's class - can't be that originial. (And for the record, he's not A-A).

I know children, five and under, with all of these names. Heck, one of them lives in my house.

Have always loved the following girls names: Pilar, Kendall, and Kiki. I have two boys (and think we're done), but these would definitely finalists if I were to have a girl. Not sure my husband would agree...
