Obama to take Executive Action regarding Gun Control

According to the Washington Post (and also according to Obama's Friday radio address):

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/01/01/obama-to-impose-new-gun-control-curbs-next-week

"the president will expand new background-check requirements for buyers who purchase weapons from high-volume gun dealers."

"The president will also use his executive authority in several other areas, these individuals said, but the overall package has not yet been finalized."

I'm sure that these actions will meet with a calm and thoughtful response from the NRA and the like.

^ cue the lameass hyperbolic NRA slippery slope arguments...

^ cue the whackadoo "Jade Helm" OMG they're gonna invade Texas to confiscate our guns and bibles and round us up and send us off to FEMA Concentration Camps to be killed off by ObamaCare Death Panels...

Yes, this ought to be quite entertaining.

I'll reserve judgement until after the actions are out. I'm all for requiring background checks at gun shows.

The NRA used to support universal background checks as well. They dropped that when they shifted from being a sportsmen's organization to being shills for the gun manufacturers and dealers.

I'm so happy for the gun nuts -- their fantasy is coming true.

At the end of the day, none of this will matter. President Ted Cruz will get rid of all of Obamas Exrcutive Orders with one quick swipe.( that's the beauty of Executive Orders. They aren't law)

Both Congress, and the American people have spoken loud and clear on this issue, they do not support it. If the president takes action against the will of Congress, and the American people, that would be an unacceptable betrayal.

Are you high? Cruz isn't getting the nomination. Be serious.

The people want it.

Congress has been bought.

People are so quick to throw around words like betrayal these days. I think Bush was out of his depth and I objected to many of his policies, but I don't think he's a bad person or that he was doing things with the intention of "destroying America" or any silliness like that. Similarly, I think most of the Republican clown car - I mean Presidential candidates - acting in concert with a Republican majority in Congress would enact policies that would be terrible for the country, I don't think any of them would be doing so out of a desire to "betray" the country or to "destroy America." Perhaps you need to take a Xanax or have a drink (possibly both) before you think too hard about politics.

Now, to your point.

I think the American people and even NRA members, when surveyed, have been pretty much in favor of expanded background checks. If, on the other hand, you're talking about the "Real Americans" who are so frequently the subject of hyper-conservative speeches, then, you may be right about their opinion.

According to a Pew survey done in 2013, for example:

...(T)wo proposals draw overwhelming support from Republicans, Democrats and independents — making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks, and laws to prevent people with mental illness from purchasing guns.

...

There are intra-party differences, as well as differences between parties, over several of these proposals. This is reflected in opinions about proposals to ban semi-automatic or assault-style weapons.

Opinions about both proposals are similar across party lines: 49% of Republicans favor a ban on semi-automatic weapons, while 44% favor banning assault-style. Among Democrats, 68% favor banning semi-automatic weapons and 69% support banning assault-style weapons.

Combining results from the two questions, 62% of moderate and liberal Republicans favor banning semi-automatic or assault-style weapons compared with 40% of conservative Republicans. While 78% of liberal Democrats (78%) favor banning semi-automatic or assault weapons, a smaller majority of conservative and moderate Democrats (65%) do so.

As far as conflicting with Congress is concerned, Presidents do it all the time, sometimes even when the President and the majority in Congress are the same party. There are limits on executive power, as has been demonstrated with the courts' reactions to Obama's executive orders regarding the rules on deportations.

You can keep lying to yourselves. The GOP nomination will come down to Trump, Cruz, and Rubio. Trump and Cruz will team up and destroy Rubio. Then one of 2 things will happen
1. Cruz agrees to be Trumps VP, creating Trump/Cruz ticket.
2. Trump and Cruz go after each other. If this happens, Cruz will come out the winner.
Sorry, but the establishment is not stealing the nomination again. I will save the link to this thread. So when it's either a Trump/Cruz ticket or Cruz gets the nomination, I can laugh at you guys.

Oh and by the way, Obama using this Executive Order will only anger conservatives more( this will be a huge help to Cruz and Trump)

I wish he would be bold and go much, much further - - the worse that could happen is it's challenged in court

No. The "worst" that could happen is a conservative uprising and bloodshed in the streets.
