Both Congress, and the American people have spoken loud and clear on this issue, they do not support it. If the president takes action against the will of Congress, and the American people, that would be an unacceptable betrayal.
People are so quick to throw around words like betrayal these days. I think Bush was out of his depth and I objected to many of his policies, but I don't think he's a bad person or that he was doing things with the intention of "destroying America" or any silliness like that. Similarly, I think most of the Republican clown car - I mean Presidential candidates - acting in concert with a Republican majority in Congress would enact policies that would be terrible for the country, I don't think any of them would be doing so out of a desire to "betray" the country or to "destroy America." Perhaps you need to take a Xanax or have a drink (possibly both) before you think too hard about politics. Now, to your point. I think the American people and even NRA members, when surveyed, have been pretty much in favor of expanded background checks. If, on the other hand, you're talking about the "Real Americans" who are so frequently the subject of hyper-conservative speeches, then, you may be right about their opinion. According to a Pew survey done in 2013, for example:
...(T)wo proposals draw overwhelming support from Republicans, Democrats and independents — making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks, and laws to prevent people with mental illness from purchasing guns. ... There are intra-party differences, as well as differences between parties, over several of these proposals. This is reflected in opinions about proposals to ban semi-automatic or assault-style weapons. Opinions about both proposals are similar across party lines: 49% of Republicans favor a ban on semi-automatic weapons, while 44% favor banning assault-style. Among Democrats, 68% favor banning semi-automatic weapons and 69% support banning assault-style weapons. Combining results from the two questions, 62% of moderate and liberal Republicans favor banning semi-automatic or assault-style weapons compared with 40% of conservative Republicans. While 78% of liberal Democrats (78%) favor banning semi-automatic or assault weapons, a smaller majority of conservative and moderate Democrats (65%) do so.
See http://www.people-press.org/2013/01/14/in-gun-control-debate-several-options-draw-majority-support/ As far as conflicting with Congress is concerned, Presidents do it all the time, sometimes even when the President and the majority in Congress are the same party. There are limits on executive power, as has been demonstrated with the courts' reactions to Obama's executive orders regarding the rules on deportations.
