There is an easy way to solve this dilemma: link to the letter and quote the threatening part. The recipient of the letter did not find it threatening. Why would you care about whether or not a bunch of Islamophobes who hate Muslims are claiming it is threatening? The letter didn't even involve them

Because it's quite clear that he knows exactly how 'his people' would act in such a situation and used that threat of violence to kill a protest that would show the Danish cartoons. Not only that, he then let a 'teach in' of sorts to convince the students that they were being racist and provocative.

In his thank letter to President Sexton, Latif wrote, presumably with a straight face, "You helped to teach them (NYU Muslim student) the importance of being proactive, rather then reactive."


This is not the same as expressing a 'public safety concern'. I would expect a member of the NYPD to support the students' rights to free speech REGARDLESS of the repercussions. Not to hold a damn 'teach in'.
