Trader Joes - they have some tamales out only on Dec and they are not the frozen ones. You can find them on the refrigerate section (pork, chicken or vegetarian). |
Parking lot of Culmore strip mall on Rt. 7. |
I'm from San Antonio and have lived in Northern VA for over 30 years. I haven't found any like we buy (by the dozen) at Christmas in San Antonio. Might have to learn to make them myself. However, believe it or not, today the tamales they have as the Thursday special at Cafe Rio (Falls Church, Willston, over by Petsmart and Target), and they were good! Pork or chicken. I got one of each. Preferred the pork ones a bit more. Most tamales I've found in Northern VA are Salvadorean -- big, wet, lots of masa. Just not the same. |
Sorry -- meant to say "today I had the tamales they have as the Thursday special at Cafe Rio . . . " |
Another voice to say do not buy the Costco tamales. |
watch Pati's ktchen on PBS...she has made them on a few episodes. Oe Rick Bayless's mexican show, also on PBS |
I went the homemade route and made them myself. Nice pork tamales. They were good. Until I had a few as a late night snack. My best guess is that I didn't steam them long enough, and the masa had not absorbed enough liquid. I have never been so uncomfortable. Imagine the most bloated you've ever felt, and then imagine that sensation inexorably growing over the course of three hours, stomach expanding and expanding, along with steadily increasing heartburn. 1/10 would not recommend. |
Anyone know of a place to buy tamales in Maryland? I'm sure I could find them in Langley Park but where? |
Elizabeth at La Jarochita in Arlington makes excellent tamales (Rajas con Queso, Puerco, Pollo, dulces).

Cafe Rios has very good tamales. Not quite San antonio quality, but very good. Uncle Julio also has very good tamales. They are small (appetizer sized) but worth buying. |
Where is this? Not seeing a Goodwill in Leesburg |
Hyattsville. La Sirinita or Taqueria la Placita. |
Try La Sandia at tysons.
I think the Costco ones are good too. They are seasonal.i have not seen them in awhile. I was a dinner cook in Mexico for one year. Most all tamales around here are salvadorian. I'm not a fan of them (Although I do love Pupusas and Salvadorian sopas) I'm pretty weary of Mexican food around here since there are not a lot of Mexicans. |
