Where are you located? The only other acceptable place is in Leesburg next to the Goodwill...the place lools awful, but the tamales are frwsh amd homemade.

Whomever said Costco and Rio...seriously??? Blech. White peoples food. Nasty and inauthentic.

Where is this? Not seeing a Goodwill in Leesburg

Have you tried the ones from Cafe Rio?

I have lived for years in San Antonio and they are about as close as you are going to get in the DC area. Not perfect, but pretty darn close.

^^^Just don't get the sauce on top of them. That messes up the tamales.

Good to know re costco. Can u tell me where some Hispanic neighborhoods are?

Oh lord. You can't figure that out?

In DC, you can find them (little old ladies) in Mt Pleasant and Columbia Heights. The best.

These are salvadoran tamales de elote. Not the thing OP is looking for at all.

Try ABC Canteen in Fairfax. And try Bar Taco. I am Mexican American. My family is from New Mexico/Chihuahua. I want to caution any tamales snobbery because I think people need to realize that tamales are regional in taste and the flavors and ingredients vary--like Honduran tamales are wrapped in banana leaves and it gives it a very different flavor from the corn husk that we are more familiar with in the US. Yes, it is best to buy fresh/homemade but you can't say "go to a Hispanic neighborhood" because you will get slightly or very different styles depending on where people are from.

I grew up in South Texas and am extremely picky about tamales. Guess where I found the best ones? Target. In the frozen appetizer section. The brand is Archer Farms. They taste just like the ones I buy in Texas. I was shocked at how authentic they are.

Yep. And at Whole Foods too which carries the Tucson Tamale ones.

Try making at home.

The poster saying taste varies by region is spot on.
