Ways I almost died

Anonymous
Fell out of a moving car at three. Luckily I only broke my collar bone.

Cancer.

When I was 14 a guy who was known to be violent held a knife to my throat. He died years later in a fire in his prison cell.
Almost drowned when I was 7, did not go back into water until I was 11.
Almost died when EMTs did not recognize how urgent my situation was, I had developed severe post-partum preeclampsia. Still remember the triage nurse cursing and yelling when I walked in and my blood pressure was 210/120. They had never even taken it while I was in the ambulance. Spent several days in the hospital.

A woman jogging in the street on East West Highway near Brookeville Road Thursday morning during early morning rush hour. She doesn't know she almost died.

This is all what I was told after surgery and I was lucid...

In surgery, they gave me too much anesthetic. My heart stopped and they had to use a breathing tube and stop surgery to do compressions and to shock me.

Here's what I remember:

Somehow I could hear the heart monitor thing beeping and that "flat" sound. Then I felt like I was outside of myself but on the ceiling looking at my body. I know this is prob just my mind making it up. But I remember seeing them put a tube in my throat and I saw them giving CPR.

I didn't die, but I was with my best friend when she did. We were 16 in Nags Head, and a presumably drunk driver hit us both as we were walking along the side of the road. He/she was never identified. I ran for help (this was before cell phones). It haunts me to this day.

Hugs hon. It wasn't your fault. Glad you are here and sorry you have to live forever with this sad, traumatic memory of a horrible day.

Age 17 - friend skidded on some black ice in her SUV. We broke through a wooden guard rail and plummeted into the woods, tipping over and striking a tree. We all walked away with just some bruises, cuts, and a broken arm for me and a broken leg for her. Thank God for seatbelts, airbags, and a sturdy car frame

We can thank Ralph Nader for these auto safety features.

Omg so glad you are ok. This is such a nightmare - I once knew a family where both the mother and the baby did not make it. It was so sudden.

Did you put these people in prison? Unimaginably horrific you went through this! Hope life is treating you well now!

PP, the moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice. If your parents are still alive, it's not too late to have them prosecuted.

Viral encephalitis two years ago. I was in the ICU, and didn't understand until months later that I only had a 30% chance of survival. Luckily, I don't remember much of it. Unfortunately, my family does.

Thanks, PP. I don't see any good coming out of prosecuting them. Just more misery all around.

I was so ill with the flu that I became severely dehydrated. I could fainted in the shower and couldn't stand up to even get food or water. I had to to to the ER and had severely low blood pressure - the nurse reacted in a shocked and nervous way to the number. I don't think I was in imminent danger of death, but I would have been in a lot of danger if I didn't get treatment.

I was driving home from a wedding in the mountains of Ojai after two or three glasses of wine. I started to drift over the center and corrected myself before another car came around the curve. I was a little sleepy but didn't believe I was tipsy at the time.

Screw you -- drunk driving is inexcusable. You should be ashamed of yourself. 2-3 glasses of wine is most certainly enough to impair your judgment and driving.
