Ways I almost died

Anonymous
I'm 40 now, but I was thinking of ways I almost died in my 20's and younger:

- Drank an enormous "shot" of overproof rum poured by a clueless friend. I was clueless. I passed out after 1 minute, vomited, and had white stool the next day (sign of liver damage). Liver damage was temporary.
- Very bad driving
- Participated in a medical research study. I underwent a routine procedure (bronchoscopy), but I didn't realize that the scientist would enter my lungs via my nasal passages. He was having trouble getting through my nasal passages, and he was VERY motivated to get his sample. He kept on spraying my nasal passages over and over with epinephrine, which can cause fatal heart rhythms in high doses. I finally realized that I was tensing up, and he was able to pass the bronchoscope through. Later that year, a student died in exactly the same situation.

As a 16 yo I was riding in a car with no backseat seat belts. The guy driving started racing another car. We came around a curve, and in our lane was a car just poking along. Luckily, my driver saw the car and slammed on his brakes barely missing the car.

Very close call in a car accident. I still get nightmares about it

Aside from a friend (obviously not a good one) almost shoving me down a set of concrete stairs, just the usual driving accidents that could have resulted in death.

Two hits of acid and got into a friends car. Hallucinated that there was no air in the car and tried to get out while moving.

Lit my shirt on fire while cooking, still have a big scar.

Got drunk and lay down in a snowbank. I felt very, very warm.

Someone tried to kill me.

Close calls with driving.

Hit by a drunk driver when I was 12 and a passenger in a friend's car.

Bucked off a horse. Kicked in the head by a horse. Fell off a horse. Run over by a horse. Do you sense a theme?

I haven't learned my lesson, I still ride horses almost every day. But 4 near-death experiences is actually pretty good when you handle many 1200 lb. animals every day for 25 years. I am almost hoping my kids continue to remain uninterested in horses!

One particularly bad drunken day. Passed out on a blanket mid-day at a concert, vomited while unconscious. I think I was 19 or 20 at the time.

And another ruptured ectopic pregnancy here. Emergency laparotomy, blood transfusions, etc.

Stupid mixes of drugs and drink. Trusting the wrong people. Near-misses while driving.

Is it a competition? I didn't realize.

Bad parenting. My dad decided he didn't want kids anymore and tried to get me to crawl off of a third floor landing as a toddler. He also let me and my cousin almost drown when we were four or five. After that, I didn't visit dad again for about a decade.
