Your teen daughter almost ran me over last night.

Wow, DCUM never ceases to amaze me.

OP, A similar thing happened to me once. I was walking in the parking lot toward my car when a man suddenly backed out of his parking space and missed me by inches. In fact, I was so startled that I yelled and hit his SUV with the two grocery bags that I was carrying.

Why do you walk behind cars that have their WHITE reverse lights on? Yes, the driver did a dumb thing, but cars have blind spots and the number of times that I have had people pop out blithely strolling behind my SUV when I'm backing out! You should also be on your guard walking through a parking lot.

Never ceases to amaze me that people walk right behind my car while I have my brake lights on... I've had people even stop behind my car while they were off and I had to honk at them before they noticed.

OK, but please remember that pedestrians do not have a legal duty to not get hit by cars, whereas drivers do have a legal duty to not hit pedestrians.

Drivers often cannot see pedestrians as quickly as during the day, especially if the pedestrians are wearing black yoga pants or dark jeans and are pushing a dark stroller. Did you have white or reflective clothing on? Does your stoller have reflective tape on it? I find that putting those blinking lights with a clip on them onto the stroller, that you can buy at running stores, are really helpful.

PS: I am not going to give any more details because I want all pedestrians to talk among themselves about being more visible at dusk and at night.

Only on DCUM could this post result in 3 pages of drivers blaming the pedestrian.

People also blame pedestrians when they are at fault or when it is pretty transparent that they have an agenda, on DCUM or otherwise.

I have always held that pedestrians need to be as aware as the drivers do and not think that because they are in the cross walk they are safe. However, if someone was texting or otherwise not paying attention that is wrong.

No, no thumbs up. Breaking other people's stuff doesn't show that you are any more mature or responsible.

Well, as long as the pedestrians are following the rules of the road, that is. As a practical matter, the pedestrian will suffer the real harm; I'm not sure why s/he then wouldn't take better care.

Thanks.

I won't give details because I want all parents of teens talking to their kids.

Police was notified. They're the ones who need this kind of info.

No, the "real girl" is the one who needs the talking to here. Not "all teenage girls." How would you feel if I sat down with you (as your husband) because a woman driver tailgated me? After all, all women need info about safe driving habits. Would you feel in a mood to absorb the info? Or would you feel that you were being condescended to, pigeonholed with some idiot, and punished needlessly?

Completely different situation. But whatever.

Legal fault isn't going to mean much when you're flattened in a parking lot.

Your exactly right PP. It's not much consolation when you're in traction to say "well the car should have seen me". There's some equal responsibility here. As much as the driver should have their eyes open (even in the back of their heads), pedestrians also have a responsibility to be vigilant about their own safety. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to make a legal turn with the light only to have to watch out for some idiot who's walking across the street against the light with their eyes and ears glued to their cell phone as oppossed to what's going on around them. Individual responsiblilty her people, you are a grown up and you can't expect your mom to follow you everywhere you go.

Teens actually see lots of videos on this stuff (but they're young and invincible and dont listen to adults much anymore). It's the adults who really may not be aware of the dreadful statistics that accompany texting while driving.

yup, soccer moms driving SUVs or minivans (on or off thehone, doesn't matter) are a close second to teens in the horrible driving/almost kill every pedestrian in sight category

The incident you are describing would take place within a split second. And you had time to do all of the above? Was the driver making a right on red? Something about this story is off.

She was not. Screw you then. She was slow and never stopped.
Um, OK, OP attempted to make eye contact, yelled and waved, jumped out of the way and was able to see that a teen girl was driving and was on her phone? In a split second? You can "screw me" all you want but the OP is leaving out some details, the OP is retelling a story someone told her or the story is completely untrue. Wouldn't be the first time on here. The message itself is important but there's a better way to go about it then simply concocting a story. There are enough true stories of such unfortunate incidents.

What are you talking about? I was almost hit once by someone taking a right on red who never bothered to look up from her phone while doing it and I assure you I had plenty of time to notice what she looked like.

OP - I think you should reconsider not giving details. If it were my daughter I would absolutely want to know this and take away her driving privileges.
