Fanny Whiffer! I can't stop laughing!

I went to school with a girl named Penny Economy. And I had an Aunt Dorcas.

I once knew a woman named Dorcas too. Dorcas DevenDorff.

Dorcas is a name found in the bible.
Hebrews used to name their children based on how they looked like or based on what the parents wished for their future.

If you knew who the biblical Dorcas was you would be ashamed of making fun of her name.

Thanks for enlightening us, Dorcas fan . . . which would quite possibly make you a DORK!

I know about the biblical reference and still think it's terrible name.

The point is, moron, that the nanny said she thinks she speaks English better than the other poster speaks Spanish. She is working here. The other poster may never need to speak Spanish.

This is the mentality of a lot of you Americans... that you'll never need to speak another language.
How ridiculous is that?

You may not need to speak another language but knowledge, cultural experience doesn't hurt.

Keep going like this and I'll keep lauging at Amerincans suffering walking around a shopping mall in South America with empty hands because they can't speak the local language.

This is not the mentality of all Americans. I have no hispanic heritage whatsoever and I speak Spanish (greatly aided by inlaws who only spoke limited English). I am happy I know another language.

HOWEVER, you make the point yourself that when you are in a country, you need to speak the local language. It's clear you do. But there are plenty of nannies who do not. They live here, they take care of children, and they do not speak English. Are you laughing a little at them too?

I feel sorry for them because you Americans hire them and you don't tell them that your local church/library has FREE english classes for them.
You don't spend time with them to teach them so DON'T BLAME ON THEM.

I would not employ a non-english speaking employee, some English would be required but tell me why it is my responsibility to spend time with them to teach them English? It is not my place to send them to a church for classes either. That is THEIR responsibilty.

You're acting like a dictator of a 3rd world country...
They keep the people ignorant so they can manipulate them.

sure it's interesting for higher class that lower classes keep in ignorance so they don't get informed of their rights and you all can keep taking advatage of them.

well congratulations in your beautiful way to make this wold a better place.

Asking someone to help themselves isn't a way of keeping them down, it is a way to empower them. Is the no longer any personal responsibility?

so why th do you push those ridiculous abc's flash cards down your toddler's throath?????????

shouldn't they learn the abc themselves?

duh!

So you are comparing a toddler to a non-english speaking person? A toddler relies on an adult to care for them and to teach them to speak regardless of what language they are learning. A non-native language speaking person is NOT the same as a baby. Adults can help themselves. Babies cannot. This is a strange way to compare learning English as a baby HAS not learned to speak yet.

This thread is so funny. It's these little posts, like the one above, interspersed in this continuing tirade on the hubris of Americans, that make me laugh.

I wonder if YOU would know where to look for help if you went to a new place where you didn't speak the language...

In some cultures people are "not allowed" to look for help or they're not taught to do stuff by themselves. and you cannot blame on them the lack of "interest" in helping themselves. sometimes they're born and raised this way and they don't know any other options.
did you know that in places like India and Brazil people don't leave the parent's house until they get married?
no, it's not for the comfort or because you think they're lazy IT'S THEIR CULTURE.

the funny thing is that when the parents are old, instead throwing them in "assisted living" homes the children get together to take care of the elderly parents... in both countries.

what do great americans do with the elderly?

another skill we learn when learning English is to try to understand a unknown word analyzing the context.

you stupid person never wanted to learn another language so you don't know that you could understand the badly spelled word reading the rest of the post right?

that's why the woRld is not a better place. because of people like YOU.
