Please explain Southern-style communication to a clueless Yankee

Still, there definitely are some common cultural differences between Southerners and Northerners, so I'm hoping someone will kindly enlighten me.

Here's my question: On another thread (why do people offer help if they don't mean what they say), one poster commented on how Yankees take things at face value whereas Southerners will say things they don't mean to be polite. I'm a clueless Yankee who often takes things at face value. I wouldn't offer help if I didn't mean it. And if someone offered me help, I might actually believe them (depending on our relationship.) My tendency to take things at face value has created some awkward situations. Can someone please clue me in? What kinds of things do Southerners tend to say to be polite that a Yankee wouldn't say?

Realy, OP, you are an idiot. I have lived all over the world and I have never encountered such rude, inconsiderate, thoughtless, comments of DCUM posters, who think, they are so wonderful and without fault. No one can help to whom, or in what geographical area, they are born. I hope you will profit by the below quote Of Sachiel Page. Your post brands you as a common, ignorant bigot.

"She's really nice."
"Isn't that so nice!"
"What a nice new house!"
"Thanks for having us for lunch. It was so nice."

I should show this to DH, maybe he'll finally understand why I don't think he compliments me when he uses "nice"

See, that's what I am saying! The north won't claim us either. The fact is that we're a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. In fact, many of us have ancestors who migrated here from both directions. I am a product of Virginia stock. Is Virginia (not NoVa) not Southern?

Good lord. You mean everyone in the Mid-Atlantic is an Osmond? That could explain a lot.

You are funny.

Yep, Texan is definitely different from Southern. Of course, I grew up in south Alabama, and we didn't think those idiots in north Alabama really qualified as Southerners either. And don't even get me started on Florida...

I apperciate the fact that you realize that NoVa is not Southern. People from up North don't understand that and think all of Virginia is "The South".

If you continue to say "nice" and "so nice" when you don't mean it, I am going to start calling things I dislike "Southern" in a sickly sweet voice. (and I don't mean if you are asked. Sometimes you just have to say someone is nice because you are asked.)

She's just so Southern!

That dinner was Southern!

Oh no, only the top 1/3 of Florida is Southern, not sure what the rest is. So out of interest I googled "The South" and maps include West Virginia? I don't consider WV to be a Southern State, they have their own unfortunate reputation that stands alone.

I grew up in Northern California and I say please, thank you, excuse me (it really irritates me when people don't say this in particular). I also offer my seat to pregnant women, the disabled and elderly, but I don't expect or really want to have doors held for me simply because of my gender. OTOH, if I'm carrying a package or toting a suitcase, I appreciate people of either gender doing that for me. I have taken many meals to neighbors in need -- probably because I grew up in a small town where that was common -- and generally try to say what I mean and mean what I say.

I've always liked New Yorkers and New Englanders for their forthright manner. I married a Midwesterner and find that folks from that part of the country are unfailingly warm and friendly in a very genuine way. When I moved here it took me a while to get used to Southerners, but I now count quite a few as friends. Until I got to know them well, though, I did find their tendency to gush when they were obviously annoyed a little phony -- e.g., "Bless her heart" said in response to someone bragging about her precocious child. At some point, though I realized that my own response as a westerner is no less phony, though said in a rather skeptical tone -- e.g., "Realllly."

I'm always amused when my Southern friends shake their heads and say things like, "Oh, she's from xxx neighborhood in Charleston. But she didn't go to xxxx school. I don't KNOW her. . . ."

In other words, the person is not in the same "class" as them - and they are not interested in ever knowing her.

The other code word is "lovely," with lots of emphasis. So-and-so's mother is LOVELY - meaning she's filthy rich. Or xxx's house is LOVELY - meaning it's huge, traditional, and decorated with a lot of chintz. Pastels of all the kids hang on the walls. Lots of pale yellow.
