Seriously, though, why do we keep hearing that atheists are smart? Is it something we're supposed to "believe" despite plenty of hard evidence above?

Of course people who don't believe a load of superstitious nonsense are, on average, going to be smarter than people who do. There is plenty of evidence to support this - e.g.

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160289608000238

But to be honest, no amount of evidence will convince you. Religious people don't put their trust in reason or rationality, they put their trust in faith. Why use reason when you can go with a bunch of random stories you have heard because of where and when you were raised, like children waiting for santa claus.

Whatever. The Ranting Atheist is clearly half-literate.

You make an excellent point.

You make an excellent point. People who return over-and-over to etiolated grouse-fests, and do nothing but add a single dribble to the mountain of existing bile are truly stupid, attention-seeking, and pathetic. They deserve our sympathies, not our scorn.

Posters who try to be witty by using words like "etiolate" that they clearly don't understand, and who-use-too-many-hyphens, so that instead of looking witty they look pompous and uneducated. Not to mention, unintentionally creating bizarre images of pale woodland birds and tall mountains (instead of pools/puddles) of liquids like bile.

In a healthy gallbladder, the bile is all one consistency. In a gallbladder containing sludge, on an ultrasound the gallbladder can be seen with two consistencies of bile. The upper consistency looks thinner and healthy, while impurities like cholesterol and mucous have sunk to the bottom and create a thicker bile at the bottom. This thicker bile is known as gallbladder sludge.

I am not the person you are sparring with, and my whole family is physical scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

There is a selection problem in the statistics behind your assertion. Atheists in our society are iconoclasts. It takes some intelligence to have the independence to go against societal norms. Conversely, it is easy for people of low intelligence to go along with the dominant beliefs. So if you measure intelligence for the two groups, you'll find intelligence differences due to that effect, which is difficult to disentangle from the merits of the positions themselves. I am sure you are intelligent enough to see the problem. Certainly I think that people who are educated in science see the possibility of a world that does not need God to explain physical phenomena, and therefore they are more often atheist, but having a good explanation for the physical world is only one category of arguments for religion.

Back to the original topic, the people who post about how much the hate mom blogs, and then list all the mom blogs they hate, that they clearly read or wrote. Then all the mom bloggers come on, like but read my blog. It's different! And unique! But I have a law degree!

Are we over mom blogs yet? Read them, or don't, but I don't want to talk about it, and stop posting links to stuff you clearly wrote being like "have you read this, look how witty and awesome it is and I never read mom blogs."

Anonymous wrote:I'm just annoyed about any conversation around grammar or spelling here. There are bound to be mistakes in many posts and rather than sticking to the content several people will turn it into a grammar debate. There is always the grammar corrector who ironically makes an error and it just tickles the crap out of the other grammar police and the fun continues!

It's just such a dull subject.

No, you are.

Regarding the faith vs reason discussion...

I reconsidered my faith in organized religious doctrin after taking a history class on the institutions of the major christian religions. There was a lot of corruption and many of the tenets were developed by people (not a higher power) to ensure power and control and to pad their pockets.

I do believe in god but it is a personal relationship outside of organized religion

Ah ha ha ha! Your, not you're. And there's no way sludge can make the "mountain" you talked about.

Grammar policing good citizens is unfriendly. But grammar policing trolls like the Ranting Atheist -> a worthy occupation!

My family is doctors, pick-pockets, fletchers, whore-mongers, and iron welders. Not sure how that is germane to the discussion.

It is relevant because one of the links was about high proportion of atheists among scientists, and because the professions are indicative of high IQ which was the subject of the other two provided links. They did not research whoremongers specifically and in any case I did not realize that is a paid occupation.
