Things I don't understand

I can at least offer an explanation, although I don't bash fat people for sport by any means. This is a drain on the health care system. This is a big reason why health care costs are out of control here. It's not healthy, and when I say that I don't mean your comment above that I surely can't be concerned about their health (I actually am, why is that so hard to believe?) but from a greater perspective, it's not healthy and it's draining our health care system. The number of health issues that stem from being overweight are just too many for any of us to ignore. And that IS my business, when it's driving MY health care costs up. And another selfish reason I get irritated with fat people for is all of the research dollars being diverted away from Type 1 diabetes to study Type 2, which is preventable and treatable - lose weight.

I don't understand why some women still outline their lips with black liner eew.

For me it's not just the black liner, it's any lip liner. I don't understand it. It never seems to look good. I hardly ever wear make-up though.

I don't understand how some people DON'T listen to music. That or they only listen to music on the radio. There's so much awesome music out there!

I'm the PP who doesn't listen to music. It just never comes up. I don't have a long commute. I can't stand to wear earbuds or headphones when exercising. Music and TV are just too much stimulation for me.

all types of music? Even classical?

I don't get the appeal of tiny dogs. I don't get the appeal of giant purses. (don't get me started on tiny dogs IN giant purses!) I don't get the appeal of heavy makeup. (though a friend says that's because I have good skin.)

I really don't get toupees and comb-overs (and bad hair plugs), and I sincerely hope that the "bald is hot or at least ok" movement ends those two things once and for all. I'd like the toupee/comb-over to die with our parents' generation.

Sometimes, even classical. If I'm going to listen to music, I'd like it to be the Stones or REM.

I couldn't imagine life wihtout music and think it does a person good Seriously, you need to try it, no matter what kind.

I don't understand p*ssing contest types. How insecure of them. Really.

If you're interested in evidence-based medicine and not just clinging to your biases, read the following and click on the links.

Or shut up, and that'll do just fine.

I don't get comb-overs or Botoxy trout-pout lips. I'm guessing the people who do this don't think it looks good on other people but think, "On me, it works!"

No. Why put effort into making yourself look strange?

Women who don't wear make-up. Plenty of you will not agree with me, but I don't believe an adult woman looks polished without make-up.

Two things. 1- you must be thinking of white women and 2- even some white women look "polished" without makeup.

Ok and another thing- that's sad and I hope you aren't involved in hiring at your job.

Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks.

You may think my opinion is "sad," but I think you're lazy.

Oh please. You're telling me that fat people don't get Type 2 diabetes?? What's really the problem with what I said, you're fat and want an excuse? The entire world knows our nation is grossly overweight, perhaps you didn't get that memo?

I agree with PP's reasons for why fat people often get bashed. If you're doing something that's stupid and unhealthy, I will criticize and mock you. If you're smoking a pack a day, or riding your motorcycle on the highway without a helmet, I will bash you. And if I see my aunt stuffing her face with potato chips while carrying close to 300lbs around her hips, and complaining between bites about the pain in her knees, I'm going to mock her because she's being ridiculously unhealthy and is bringing the pain on herself.

Even your "fat acceptance" blog carries this comment: "Poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle do cause health problems, in people of all sizes." You seem really angry that fat people get mocked. But I think what's really getting mocked is people who are stupidly self-destructive with their unhealthy lifestyle. Labeling them "fatties" is just lazy shorthand. I'm going to mock the skinny smokers and meth addicts just as much as the fat people. And when I see an overweight person who works hard to control her weight (like me!), I'm not interested in mocking her.

Okay, well if you don't understand, I can explain it to you. Not everyone wants to buy a house. I am 37 and have never owned a house. Don't know when I will.

We've bought and sold five homes. We've never lost money on the sale of a house. We just moved away from the D.C. area. There is no way we would even consider buying a home right now. And we could easily afford it. We have outstanding credit and were pre-approved before we moved. There is way too much uncertainty in the housing market right now. And I don't think we've reached the bottom. No one really seems to know what houses are worth right now.

Despite what a lot of people say, we do not think this is a good time to buy.

Not arguing, just offering my opinion, as someone who rarely wears makeup: when I wear makeup I feel like I'm pretending to be someone I'm not. I'm not saying that everyone who wears make-up is pretending to be someone they're not, it's just how I feel about myself. I don't feel like I need to be "polished". I'm fine the way I am, even if I don't look like other people. I definitely think other women are free to wear all the makeup they want. I know other women enjoy wearing it and that is fine.

I don't understand how naive some people are and why they are in denial that racist things happen.
