Any nonessential federal employee caught working/performing official duties (i.e. sending an official work-related email, etc.) during a shutdown faces a penalty of up to $5000 in fine and a possible 2 weeks in jail sentence. |
Any new predictions on what will happen April 8th? |
*rolling the die... snake eyes!* they should just shut it down and take all the shit that comes with that and stop f'ing around with threats. man up congress! |
Either Boehner will man up, as you say, and tell the tea party contingent that the country and the party are more important than their fetishes and come to some sort of agreement (which will be a pretty good one for them, since Obama is no hard-ass negotiator), or he'll fold and everyone will suffer the consequences. And from that point the GOP will own the recession. |
I think there's about a 1/3 chance of a shutdown. I think right now it's just figuring out how to get enough House Republican votes. |
They haven't actually proposed anything to fix the recession. A few months ago everything was "jobs, jobs, jobs". Obamacare was a "jobs killing" law. But they have not even proposed the outline for something big enough to fix the recession. They aren't interested in fixing the recession. And why should they (other than because they are our elected officials)?. They would be extremely happy if it continued into the 2012 elections. |
This recession is nothing compared to what is coming. A federal shutdown might save the country by showing seriousness about fiscal sanity. We are going over the cliff people. Obama's outrageous spending plan has failed and now we are in 1973 with a huge deficit. GET REAL. |
The spending worked. We should have done more of it. We shouldn't have done the tax cuts. They did not pay off. |
But I bet you still want your taxes at historical lows... |
You must have meant '83. In '73 (Nixon, our debt as a % of gdp was trending down). In '83 (Reagan) it was trending steeply upward. Plus inflation in '73 was over 6% and rapidly increasing. We don't have any of that. And a shutdown doesn't show crap about seriousness. A proposed budget that cuts the main budget line items (defense, social security, and medicare) would show seriousness. So far no one has the balls to present it. |
Ha ha no inflation? We have plenty of it and it is about to explode. Get ready to be poor. The dollar shrinking daily and the only way it doesn't is with major cuts in printing and spending. Prepare, of is right in front of our eyes just like the stupid mortgage nonsense....only far worse. Do not believe that tinkering and "smart people" will work to avoid this fiscal asteroid we haven't seen anything yet. A leader with guts, smarts and optimism is needed NOW. Obama is not it . People don't follow him, they watch him from a safe distance. That speach last night was pitiful. WTF is the plan? He is waaaaaaay over his head, we need better. |
Don't get all your news from Glenn Beck and other gold bugs. Cuts in spending will just send the economy into a tailspin, and even if we did cut enough to balance the budget, the Republicans would just give it away to the rich in tax cuts on unearned income like the last time the Dems balanced the budget. |
if you're really serious about cutting the deficit, really serious and not just making about of noise...
1st, cut the DOD budget in half, 2nd, cut the budgets for both wars in half 3rd, make coporations like GE ($14 Billion profit) pay their fair share in taxes since currently they pay zilch. |
You do not understand inflation or currency. |
I understand printing money to fund government. It's a last resort and can't continue without major pain. You sould like the guy who told me I didn't understand mortgage backed securities and risk tolerance. Sloppyness and debt accumulation equals poverty. |
