They have solid theatre backgrounds.
You do have the equivalent in the US, though some of them are a bit younger

Meryl Streep
Frances McDormand
Marsha Gay Harden

and I'd add Julianne Moore to that list, but for the fact she is also an exceptional beauty.

Kathy Bates and Melissa Leo too. I could see Emma Stone becoming someone like Helen Mirren when she is older.

I honestly think England has the absolute best actors on Earth. The best talent. The Dames are evidence of this!
USA has nothing even close.

This is some weird gatekeeping with people digging up roles from decades ago with which most people are unfamiliar.

I literally watched this movie with my daughter 2 weeks ago. It’s on amazon prime. A gorgeous Diana Rigg plays the cruel murder victim!

I really didn’t know who she was until the HP movies so it’s been fun for me to see that actually I sort of grew up watching her in different roles without knowing who she was! One of the many talented theater actors who supported themselves with small character roles in movie and TV over the years.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie wasn't a small role. She won a best actress Oscar. She was amazing in A Room With a View.

I just finished watching "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" with Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench. In some ways it was a different role for Dame Maggie but its a RomCom of sorts and very good.
